Underclass Games Analysis: Pitching Reports from Sept. 7th

Dan Cevette
Director, New York

The Underclass Prospect Games were a huge success, bringing young players together from all over New York. The exposure PBR gives is crucial for players trying to play baseball at the next level. We would like to give a special thanks to all the players, parents, help, and Horseheads HS for making Sept. 7th a truly special day for us.

The scouting notes on all 24 pitchers are now complete, lets take a look at what Sept 7th had on the mound.

Ryan Williams RHP/1B (Kenmore East HS, 2017)
Williams stands 6-foot-2 210-pounds with an athletic strong well put together frame. On the mound he has all the projection you could ask for in a pitcher. Young, great size, and signs of arm strength. His delivery is quiet and balanced, clean quick arm action to a high 3/4 slot. His fastball sat 81-82 mph with signs of more in the tank. He throws what appears to be a slider, gets around the ball a bit too much but with development could be a plus pitch. Fun player to watch grow and develop in the next couple years.

Garrett Boldt OF/RHP (Olean HS, 2017)
Boldt stands 5-foot-10 145-pounds and is very athletic. On the mound he starts balanced and controlled over the rubber, had good shoulder alignment towards his target, uses a short quick arm action to an over the top arm slot getting downward angle on the ball. His fastball sits consistently 79-82 mph with a 65-67 mph curveball that had 12/6 shape. His changeup runs down and away arm side sitting 66-68 mph. Nice young prospect to keep an eye on.

Stephen Centorani RHP (Windsor HS, 2016)

Centorani stands 6-foot-5 169-pounds with a projectable frame with a lot to like. He starts from the stretch with his hands high, uses a quick tempo and breaks hands as he starts forward. He drops hard on his back side, front shoulder lined up with home, arm action is long and towards 2B, throws from a low 3/4 slot with natural arm side run sitting 79-81 mph with his fastball. Changeup has arm fade with fastball hand speed sitting 71-72, his fastball does have some late life but if he stays taller on his backside and keeps his hands more on top of the ball he will see even better results. Interesting prospect to keep an eye on.

Cody Kaestle RHP (Baldwinsville HS, 2016)

Kaestle stands 5-foot-11 170-pounds with a lean athletic build. He stays tucked over the rubber with a good tempo. He keeps his shoulders pointed towards his target, drives off his back leg with a strong front side. His arm action is quick and he throws from a mid 3/4 slot. His fastball sat 80-82 mph with some downward angle, his curveball has late sharp action with 10/4 shape at 65-67 mph. He shows a 70 mph changeup with fastball hand speed. During his delivery he finishes upright on a stiff front side, he needs to work on getting out in front with more extension.

Rayman Singh  RHP/SS (Bill Crothers HS, 2016)
Singh stands 5-foot-10 175-pounds with a solidly built frame. On the mound he has a balanced setup with a knee lift over the rubber and good hand separation before he drives towards home. He uses a long deep arm action and releases the ball from a high 3/4 lot with late life on his fastball at 80-82 mph. His curveball has sharp late action with 12/5 shape at 62 mph.

His arm action is straight out by shortstop very short and quick from a mid 3/4 slot. Fastball has action to it running down and away at 80-82 mph, very deceptive, needs to finish more over his front knee. His curveball was 67-68 mph with sharp 10/5 shape, from his arm angle it’s a very strong pitch.

Joseph Kruszka RHP/SS (Gowanda HS, 2016)
From the mound Kruszka starts with a wide base, works with a fast tempo and keeps his hands high on his separation. He drives off his back side using upward shoulder tilt, long arm action to a high 3/4 slot. His fastball sat 80-82 mph with some downward angle. His curveball had sharp late action at 73 mph with 2/8 shape. Fun prospect to watch develop over the next couple years.

His arm action is clean and back towards the SS, throws from a high 3/4 slot with a fastball that sits 73-75 mph. His only attempt at a curveball was 66 mph but released it early and out of the zone. He has the perfect body to gain some valuable muscle and increase his arm strength this winter.
