2022 OHSAA Tournament: Division III State Semifinal - No. 22 Milan Edison vs No. 23 Roger Bacon

AKRON - It took eight innings but MIlan Edison finally broke loose to break a scoreless tie and the Chargers defeated Roger Bacon 3-0 in the Division III state semifinals Saturday night at Canal Park.

Thomas Simon went the first seven innings allowing five hits to pick up the win with Ben Bates earning the save with a no-run eighth for Edison.

Held to just two hits through seven, Edison put three on the board in the top of the eighth on two hits, two walks and two Roger Bacon errors. Hayden Fry started the uprising with a single to center and eventually scored on a one-out single to left by Bryce Michaelis.

The Chargers added two insurance runs in the frame on a throwing error to home, allowing pinch runner Aiden Drake and Blake Simon to touch the plate for a 3-0 lead.

Bates permitted a leadoff walk in the last of the eighth before a strikeout and double-play liner to Clint Finnen at second base, sending Milan Edison to the state title game in its first appearance ever in the Final Four.

Jake Tschida was stellar in defeat for the Spartans, fanning a dozen in 5.2 innings of two-hit work.

Luke Wagner and Logan Huber had two singles apiece for Bacon, the 23rd-rated D-III team in the state which left seven runners on base. Edison, ranked 22nd in Division III, stranded 11.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Simon struck out 10 and walked a pair to pick up the victory. The senior left-hander, ranked 46th among 2022 southpaws in Ohio, threw 64 of 95 pitches for strikes, permitting just two runners to reach third base.

BIG INNING: The fourth inning was when Simon shined most in throwing seven shutout frames. A single by Wagner and a bunt hit from Anthony Hoffman put two aboard and a sac bunt by Jacob Goyette had runners on second and third with just one away for Roger Bacon. However, Simon slammed the door with consecutive strikeouts and the Spartans managed just one more hit in the contest.

KEY PLAY: Simon was aided by a number of defensive plays, most importantly in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and third and one away, a fly ball to shallow center field was out number two and the throw home from Michaelis to catcher Dominic Dymond was in plenty of time to retire Bacon with the third out.

WHAT’S NEXT: Seven senior starters must be replaced by Roger Bacon, which made it to the Final Four for the second time in the last three seasons played. The lone starters back are cleanup hitter Anthony Hoffman and speedy sophomore center fielder AJ Meyer, who made a nice diving catch to take a hit away from Dymond in the top of the first. Sophomore Blake Simon, who walked in all three plate appearances, is another returnee for the Spartans.
