2022 OHSAA Tournament: Division IV State Semifinal - No. 2 Lincolnview vs Tiffin Calvert

AKRON - Dane Ebel threw a one-hitter to lead Lincolnview past Tiffin Calvert 8-1 on Thursday at Canal Park and with it a second consecutive berth in the Division IV state title game.

The junior right-hander allowed a lone single in the seventh inning to Mason Johnson in his masterful performance for the Lancers, which lost to Warren JFK in the 2021 championship contest.

Ebel struck out 11 and walked two in moving to 7-0 on the season, fanning five in a row and nine out of 14 at one point.

Landon Price led off the game with a double in the top of the first and came around to score for a 1-0 lead and Lincolnview pulled away with a four-run fourth featuring a run-scoring single from Ebel and a two-run double by Caden Hanf.

Price made it 6-0 in the fourth with a run-scoring single and Austin Bockrath had a two-run hit in the fifth for the Lancers, which will take on Russia for the Division IV crown at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Pinch runner Jamison Godfrey scored the only run for Tiffin Calvert on a wild pitch with two outs in the seventh.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: A one-hitter by Ebel is a no-brainer when it comes to selecting the Player of the Game. Although just missing a third no-hitter this season, Ebel sparkled on this day for the second-rated team in the state in D-IV, pushing his tournament total of strikeouts to 30 in 17.2 innings

DEJA VU: It was just six days ago that a Lincolnview pitcher took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. And like the regional final when Price lost his no-no on the first pitch in the bottom of the seventh, it was the same scenario for Ebel whose no-hitter ended on the initial pitch of the seventh.

NO-HIT HISTORY: Ebel just missed out on history with the near no-hitter, the last one at the state tournament coming in 1986 by Cameron Varga of Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy. There have been 12 total in the 94-year state tourney, but only one in the past 36 years.

MORE THAN A PITCHER: Price, the Lincolnview ace who will start in Saturday’s state title game, did not hurt a season batting average of .447 entering Thursday’s semifinal contest. The Ohio State pitching commit had a double and two singles, scoring two and driving in another out of the leadoff position for the Lancers.

TEAM EFFORT: Every Lincolnview starter reached base including five that got on two or more times. While the bottom four in the order only combined for one hit, the on-base percentage was .429 at 6-14.

BIG STAGE: The big stage of playing at state does not seem to bother Hanf, who has had at least one hit in all three state games played by the Lancers and is now 4-for-9 after a 2-for-4 performance against Calvert. Binkley also has hit in all three state games played to date after a bunt single in the first.

WHAT’S NEXT: It was a great finish to the season for TIffin Calvert, once 7-11 on the season including losses in the first four games of the year. How will Matt Coleman’s team do next year after making it to the FInal Four for the first time in school history? Leading hitter Nick Palm returns for another year at shortstop with four additional starters returning, two that pitched against Lincolnview, including freshman Blake Coleman who threw three frames of one-hit shutout relief.
