Blaine Albright LHP / 1B / Bath, OH / 2023

LIMA - As an 11-year-old, Blaine Albright was cut from his travel team. Four years later, the Lima Bath freshman is an Ohio State commit.

“That motivated me to keep working hard,” Albright said of being cut. “More practice, practice, practice and keep repeating things.”

The work paid off, helped out by playing for the Dayton Classics in the summer.

“Their director contacted Ohio State to come watch me pitch,” the 6-1 165-pound left-hander said. “The pitching coach came to see me pitch. After that I went to a prospect camp. All the coaches were nice, showing us all around. It felt like home.”

As the only college Albright had been in contact with, the state’s fourth-ranked 2023 jumped at the opportunity to become a Buckeye.

“Since I was little I’ve always been an Ohio State fan,” Albright related. “It just felt right.”

The top-rated southpaw pitcher in Ohio’s freshman class admits the timing was a surprise.

“I didn’t think it would happen this early,” Albright pointed out. “I always knew I had the ability if I worked hard to try and get better. Once I got with the Classics it all kind of took off. Every year I’ve gotten better and better and Gregg Beemer does a great job with their recruiting.”

Ohio State saw a lot to like in Albright, who has played with the Classics for three years now.

“They like that I have good velocity and that I’m left-handed,” Albright said of OSU. “I’ve got good movement on the ball and good offspeed pitches.”

The development of his game helped Ohio State take notice.

“My fastball is getting up there in velo and my curve has gotten better,” Albright said. “I just need to work on my change and start working on a slider.”

The mental side of pitching is another area of focus for Albright.
