Charles Dean OF / RHP / Centennial, OH / 2021

COLUMBUS - There is a little old-school in Charles (C.J.) Dean when it comes to what the Centennial junior feels he can bring to a college program.

“I’m always willing to push myself,” related the third-rated uncommitted 2021 outfielder in Ohio, while adding, “I respect the coach with a positive attitude.”

The 6-0 175-pounder got an up-close look at what it was like to be a college recruit right at home.

“Ever since I started playing as a kid I’ve dreamed of playing at the next level,” Dean admitted. “My sister attended Memphis for basketball, and seeing her do that I began to believe I can go play sports at the next level just like her.

“We’ve always been very competitive,” Dean added about his relationship with his sister Alyssa. “When she’d go to the gym at 7 a.m. I’d ask if I could go with her. We have a lot of respect for each other and are always trying to push each other.”

That drive to improve has helped the 51st-ranked junior in the state receive interest from the likes of Eastern Michigan, Ohio U, Penn State, VMI and James Madison.

“The VMI coach (Ray) Noe said one thing they like about me is my work ethic,” Dean said. “They admire the work I put in in everything I do.”

A throwing program has Dean up six miles an hour from a year ago in the run-and-gun and hitting with his father has helped his exit velocity reach 90 while working with a speed trainer has his time in the 60 down from 7.1 last year to 6.8.

“I feel faster with all the work I’ve put in with a trainer and stronger with the work I’ve done in the weight room,” Dean noted.
