Ohio Pitchers Enjoy Opportunity To Throw At Super 60
MCCOOK, Ill. - Both Landon Beidelschies and Gavin Jones were ecstatic to have the opportunity to show what they could do at the Prep baseball Report Super 60 Pro Showcase.
In the end, each of the second-rated 2022 pitchers in Ohio, Beidelschies a southpaw and Jones a righty, not only impressed but also learned a little about themselves after participating in the 20th annual event with approximately 100 pro scouts in attendance.
“To perform in front of that many scouts was super cool,” explained Jones, the 90th-ranked senior RHP in the nation. “It was just fun to know that all the eyes are on you at that moment and it really made me appreciate how far I’ve come over the past couple of years.”
Being in front of MLB scouts was potentially life changing for the two 17-year-olds
“It was nerve racking,” admitted Beidelschies, the 62nd-rated 2022 LHP in the country. “I’ve never played in front of that many scouts before.”
Those watching would not have known after the Canfield product did his best to make an impression on those observing his bullpen.
“Beidelschies looked to be only scratching the surface of where he will be in three or four years, even though his fastball climbed up to 93 miles per hour,” noted Shooter Hunt, vice president of scouting for PBR. “There's more in the tank, and I think he's got a shot to be very tough on left-handed hitters.”
The 6-3 215-pound lefty, one of six southpaw pitchers participating at this year’s Super 60, enjoyed being part of the event.
“It was a great opportunity to play with some of the best players in the country,” pointed out the Ohio State commit. “The coverage was great and there were a ton of scouts there.
“The highlight for me was my bullpen and the chance to get to show off in front of all those scouts.,” continued Beidelschies, who sat 90-92, touching 93 mph with his fastball to go along with a 76-78 change and 78-80 slider. “It was all about preparation. The guys that prepare the best usually succeed.”
Jones, an Alabama commit, did his best to make an impression.
“Overall I think it was a great event,” the North Royalton senior said. “I didn’t perform as well as I would’ve liked going into it, but it was still a great experience being around all of the other great players and getting to perform in front of that many eyes.”
Hunt liked what he saw in the 269th-ranked 2022 in the nation.
“Strikes seemed to be at a premium at the event, but Jones pounded the zone in what was one of the most mature and efficient bullpens,” Hunt noted. “Uptempo and athletic, the right-hander carries a starter profile with the ability to pound the zone with multiple pitches, including a low-to-mid-90s arm.”
The 6-4 210-pounder was 91-93 with his fastball to go along with an 83-84 change and 79-81 curve.
“The highlight for me was just being able to throw in front of all the scouts,” Jones related. “It’s not often you get the chance to show your abilities in front of that many people, so stepping on the mound and getting to throw in front of everybody that was there was a super cool moment.
“I think I can build from my performance in the future to prepare for bad days and learn how to counter those to make them good,” added Jones. “This event was not my best bullpen but I can hopefully learn from what I did poorly and use it to not have them happen again.”
Scouts talked with both of the participants from Ohio, which a year ago had four players at the Super 60, Gavin Bruni, Ryan Gilbert, William Cook and Brayden Lybarger.
“I had a few scouts talk to me following the event, it was mainly about them wanting to keep in touch and follow my progress throughout high school baseball this year,” Jones noted. “This meant a lot to me, knowing that where I’m at now is opening eyes. It also just gives me reason to keep working hard to make myself better next time I can get seen.”
It was a step toward the eventual goal according to Beidelschies.
“I have been in contact with a couple scouts and it means a lot to me because playing professional baseball is my dream,” the 10th-ranked senior from Ohio said.
Jones had one more addition to his feelings about the event, something most of the 67 participants from 35 states as well as the Canadian provinces of Ontario and British Columbia, concurred.
“I would just like to thank the staff at PBR for putting on such a great event,” the fifth-rated senior in Ohio concluded. “It was the experience of a lifetime to perform at this event and on top of that meet a ton of great other players.”
