Prep Baseball Report

Q and A with 2014 Marshall Commit: Chad Roberts (Wilmington HS)

Chad Roberts, OF, Wilmington HS, Class of 2014

PBR: Why did you choose Marshall?

Roberts: I chose Marshall because it felt right as soon as I stepped on campus. Between the town of Huntington, the people there, and the coaching staff I just loved it.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Roberts: I was considering schools such as Ohio University, Baldwin Wallace University and a couple others.

PBR:  You were previously committed to Ohio State, why did you decide to reopen you recruitment?

Roberts: A miscommunication between the coaches and my family and myself led me to my decision of reopening my options.

PBR:  Where did the coaching staff first see you compete and how you’re your relationship develop with the rest of the coaching staff?

Roberts: I had talked with coach Newman at a showcase I had performed and once he learned light of my situation I went to Marshall for a visit and got along great with the coaches, players, and other recent recruit that we're present for my visit.

PBR: What role does the coaching staff expect you to play during your first year on campus?

Roberts: I'm expected to come in and compete for a position and I'll work very hard to play right away. I plan on coming in to the program and doing what I can to benefit the team and program as a whole and hopefully that means being on the field.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help the Herd?

Roberts: My biggest strength is my bat. I tend to work gap to gap and can provide run support so I believe that will be a beneficial standpoint for the Herd.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Roberts: So many people have had a great impact on me. My dad has put me in the right places at the right times, my mom has kept me in line when this process got grueling and helped me keep working, and my strength coach not only developed me to be a division one athlete, but developed me to be a better man that I am today. So I would say my father, mother, and strength coach Bill Schomaker.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most exciting experience playing summer ball?

Roberts: This past summer I played for the Cincinnati Stix Elite and next summer I will be playing for the Cincy Flames. Probably my most exciting experience would be when we played the Ohio Elite in the Tri State Elite tournament and we were down two and I hit a triple to score two runs in the last inning and scored on an error to win the game.

PBR: What were your stats last season for Wilmington?

Roberts: I batted .519 with 13 doubles and scored 24 runs. I was first team all conference

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you have faced in Ohio?

Roberts: The toughest pitcher I have faced is probably a pitcher from the Dayton classics. I can't remember his name but he had some good breaking balls and fooled me once or twice in our games.
