2019 Spring Team Preview: Strongsville Mustangs
Team Name: Strongsville Mustangs
Head Coach: Doug Cicerchi
Division: I
2018 Record: 16-13
Conference Record: Greater Cleveland Conference, 9-5 (T-3rd)
Returning Starters/Pitchers: 6/2
2019 Team Strengths:
- Toughness
- Senior Leadership
- Team Offense
- Team Defense
Coach Outlook: "Our schedule, both within the toughest conference in the Cleveland area and outside of the conference, will prepare us for the state tournament. We have a lot of new varsity players but bring back a core of position players that will help lead us to be a better team in May than we will be in April."
PBR Outlook: Coach Doug Cicerchi always has his Mustangs playing a tough schedule and in 2019, that looks to be the case. Look for the talented Mustangs lineup to be battle-tested with hopes of playing their best ball come tourney time.
Top Returning Players:
- Jack Frank (Video), CF, 2019, 6'/195 lbs, L/L, 3 year starter, Michigan State recruit and simply one of the best players in the state. .329/.500/.539, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 25 R, 10 2B, 18 BB, 10 HBP, 9 K, 11 SB, excellent defensive CF.
- Jesse Kramer, 1B, 2019, 6'/190 lbs, R/R, 3 year starter, uncommitted. .324 avg, .449 obp, 7 RBI, 17 R, 12 BB, 5 HBP, 14 K, 11 SB, currently injured due to a tackle during the HS football season, but a true middle-of-the-order bat who we are hopeful can return this year.
- Giovanni Lombardo, 3B, 2019, 5'11"/200 lbs, L/R, 3 year starter, uncommitted. Team leading .244 avg, 22 RBI, 10 R, 9 BB, 8 K, 5 SB, very good defensive 3B who will repeatedly give himself up at the plate to drive in a run.
- Ryan Hartman, SS/OF, 2019, 5'7"/170 lbs, R/R, 2 year starter, Ohio Northern recruit. .404 OBP, 10 R, 8 RBI, 16 BB, 8 SB, versatile defensive player who is good at both middle infield spots and both corner outfield spots.
- Matt Bush, 2B/RHP, 2019, 5'10"/170 lbs, R/R, 2 year starter, uncommitted. .393 OBP, 9 RBI, 6 R, 16 Ks in 11 IP, very good defensive 2B and relief pitcher with an excellent slider.
- Bob James, RHP, 2019, 6'3"/210 lbs, R/R, Hiram recruit. Saw limited action last year behind 5 senior pitchers but has improved as much as anyone in our program and should have a dramatically increased role this year.
- Nate Uhas, C/OF, 2020, 5'8"/145 lbs, R/R. Limited to 4 games last year due to injury, he should be back at full strength this year and will continue to be the excellent receiver he's been in the past.
- Ben Lien, C/OF/RHP, 2021, 5'11"/170 lbs, R/R. Started the last 3/4 of the season at catcher as a freshman for a senior-laden pitching staff and was a huge reason we reached the regional final.
