Our staff was at the Newmarket Soccer Club on Saturday night for our second organizational Scout Day of the year, the Newmarket Hawks Scout Day.

We got a look at a trio of team's from the Newmarket program as they showcased player's from the 2022 class, all the way up to 2025s. Below, we take a look at five standouts from the Newmarket Scout Day, highlighted by a trio of seniors and a pair of 2024s.

Alex Johnson RHP / 3B / Bill Crothers, ON / 2022

Johnson, 6-foot-3, 205-pounds, was the most impressive arm at the Newmarket Scout Day. All 3 pitches were around the strike zone as he showed good feel for his best secondary pitch, the CB which sat 72-75 mph with bite and the ability to throw it for a strike. The FB was 83-85 mph with some life out of the hand and his CH was 76-78 mph. There’s present strength on the mound and Johnson will only get better with more development, he will be a pitcher we will follow in the EBLO Elite League.

Adam Cheruti OF/ RHP/ N/A, ON / 2022

Cherutti, 5-foot-9, 175-pounds, is an athletic two-way player that showed well on both sides of the ball. In the OF, he fields the ball clean and has a top OF velo of 78 mph. At the dish, he uses an exaggerated leg kick to generate power and finished the day with a 83 mph exit velo. On the mound, Cherutti’s FB sat 82-84 with the ability to fill up the zone consistently. The CB sat 68-70 mph and the CH was consistently at 79 mph. Cherutti showed well and has a chance to play at the next level, whether that’s in Canada or the U.S.

Sam Koomen LHP / 1B / Huron Heights Secondary School, ON / 2022

Koomen started his day by running one of the best 60-times (7.19). Our staff got our first real look when he was fielding ground balls at first base and the left-handed arm immediately caught our attention. Koomen has a quick arm from a low ¾ arm slot and his mid 70s fastball, top 77, looked to play up. He had feel for a pair offspeed pitches, a curveball and an effective changeup, and moved well on the mound. Koomen is off to Guelph University in the fall and is showing the makings of an effective left-hander out of the Gryphons bullpen.

Jack Comper RHP / 3B / Sacred Heart CHS, ON / 2024

2024 RHP/3B Jack Comper had one of the best showings among underclassmen on Saturday and currently stands at 6-foot, 155-pounds. His carrying tool right now in the right-handed arm that sat 78-80mph on the mound. He works downhill and flashed several good breaking balls at 66-67 that had good downward action. He moves well on the mound and although it’s raw right now, there’s a lot to like and work with. Comper has the makings of an intriguing arm in the 2024 class as he continues to grow and develop.

Jacob Pruitt OF / RHP / Bradford District High School, ON / 2024

2024 OF/RHP Jacob Pruitt may have displayed the most well-rounded toolset we saw on Saturday from the underclass group. The athletic frame at 6-foot, 165-pounds has plenty of room to fill out and Pruitt started his day by running the best 60-time at 6.97. He also stood out at the dish where he impressed from the right-side when he was catching the baseball out front. He worked mostly to the pullside where he had the top exit velocity among underclassmen, 86mph. The arm doesn’t stand out at this point but Pruitt displayed a pair of good tools this weekend.
