Northern Games Quick Hits II

Ryan Sattz
PBR Ontario Scout

On Wednesday, June 8th our staff made the trip out to Sudbury to host another Northern Games from the beautiful Terry Fox Sports Complex. The Northern Games allows our staff a chance to get a look at players up North who may not have the chance to attend events in the GTA.

Not only did we get our eyes on those players but several others who made the trip as well. Our post-event coverage continues below as PBR Ontario Scout, Ryan Sattz, provides notes and video on three players that stood out to him.

Gabriel Larocque C / OF / St. Charles College, ON / 2026

Larocque, a 5-foot-9, 135-pounds C/OF for the Sudbury Voyageurs looked impressive throughout the day. In the outfield the approach was simple and easy with good momentum behind his throws. Behind the plate the arm was short and quick with good footwork on his throws. He has taken major strides behind the plate with his arm strength. At the plate the swing is geared towards the pull side. He starts with the hands low and generates launch angle with quick twitch. On the mound the release was repeated with a quality three-pitch mix. Pounds the zone early and often, can locate all pitches and works downhill fast. Will be a name to look out for in the coming years.

AJ Dubeau 1B / RHP / MacDonald Cartier, ON / 2025

Dubeau, a 6-foot-0, 155-pounds 1B/RHP for the Sudbury Voyageurs has taken strides in his games since last time we saw him. At the plate the hands stayed on path, got on time with a toe tap and had good extension on his swings. Worked up the middle and to the opposite field with the majority of his hits being line drives. In the infield Dubeau showed range at the corner, can cover ground with his long legs and the hands worked out front with good footwork working through the ball. On the mound he looked solid with a long loose arm action. Dubeau had good drive off of his back leg, used his body well getting synced up with his arm release. Projectable 2025 that continues to improve.

Matthew Paolucci 1B / 3B / Silverthorne Collegiate Institute, ON / 2024

Paolucci, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound 1B/3B for the Etobicoke Rangers has a lot of upside in his game. At the plate the hands were quiet, looking to punish baseball to the pull side and he caught the ball out front often. Paolucci does not get cheated with his swings and looks to drive the ball to the gaps. In the infield, Paolucci looked comfortable with good footwork behind his throws, has some carry behind them and works behind the baseball with his hands staying out front. Has put on some weight in the offseason and expect a big summer from a promising 2024.
