Conference Preview: WPIAL Class AAA - Section 4

With the start of the high school season less than a month away we will be previewing conferences around the state leading up to opening day. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each conference.

           WPIAL Class AAA - Section 4

Preseason Favorites

This race is way too close to call. Belle Vernon may have a slight edge solely based on the depth of its senior talent, but each team in the section has a legitimate argument for feeling they should finish at the top of the loop. Thomas Jefferson should score a lot of runs could emerge from the pack if their pitching holds up. This should be one of the most exciting section races in any classification in the WPIAL this year.

 

Preseason co-Players of the Year

A.J. OlaszA.J. Olasz, West Mifflin (Class of 2014)

Olasz is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound LHP/1B from West Mifflin HS. He went 5-0 with a 1.29 era for the Steel City Wildcats this past summer. The lefty registered 49 strikeouts in 38 innings of work. Olasz is coming off a junior season in which he went 3-4 with a 2.68 ERA. He struck out 64 in 401⁄3 innings for the 10-9 Titans. The University of Cincinnati recruit sits in the mid 80s with the ability to touch 88 mph.

Joe McHughJoe McHugh, Thomas Jefferson (Class of 2014)

McHugh is a 6-foot, 170-pound SS/3B that hit .406 with 22 RBI in 2012 and followed that up by hitting .357 with nine doubles, a triple and a home run in 2013. McHugh has the potential to develop additional power as his frame continues to develop and may see a move to 3B at some point in his future. The right-handed hitter is a Pitt recruit.
