Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

Zach GuthThe 2018 schedule of fall events continues on Saturday, September 15th when 25 prospects from three states head to Widener University in Chester for the Eastern PA Fall Review. The format for the day will include a morning position player showcase that will allow prospects to run the 60-yard dash, take live batting practice and demonstrate their defensive abilities. The afternoon will be devoted to a nine inning game.

Today we preview we look back to the first year of the event in 2013 when LHP Zach Guth (Franklin Area) mixed a fastball at 84-87 and a quality curveball at 72-75 in striking out 8 of 9 batters he faced. Guth, currently a 6-foot-4, 210-pounder recently completed his first season in the Atlanta Braves organization after being drafted in the 26th round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

Stay up to speed with live updates during the course of the event as well as throughout the year on Twitter @pbrpennsylvania and on Instagram @pbrpennsylvania.

Scouting Report

5/26/14 Guth tossed a complete game five hitter with 13 strikeouts and drove in two runs with a 1st inning double. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound Indiana recruit sat 82-84 with significant arm side run to his fastball. Guth also showed the ability to cut his two-seam fastball with similar velocity. Guth mixed his 75 mph 1/7 breaking curveball and a 76 mph changeup effectively during a dominant outing.

5/20/14 Guth was down a bit in velocity from the fall (84-87) sitting 82-84 while topping at 85 mph from a high 3/4 arm slot. The Indiana commit showed the ability to cut and run his fastball with good late life. Guth's 1/7 breaking curveball showed two-plane action at 73 mph. When he stayed on top of the pitch it would dive at RHH's back knee. Guth's change up continues to improve and has become a very effective 3rd pitch for the 6-foot-3, 170-pound lefty at 78 mph.

9/29/13 Guth is a 6-foot-3, 170-pound lefty that has had a breakout summer and fall on the mound. He made six appearances in the fall program logging a total of 18 innings of work. He put up eye popping numbers with 40 strikeouts, more than two an inning, while sitting 84-86. Guth touched 87 mph on a number of occasions while displaying run and cut fastball options. He also showed a feel for his 77 mph curveball and a vastly improved 74 mph changeup. Guth has garnered considerable interest from a number of Divison I programs as a result of his success this fall and will begin the process of sifting through offers in the coming weeks.

9/22/13 Guth was in complete control at DeSales University. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound lefty sat 83-85 and showcased his complimentary pitches on the way to nine strikeouts in three innings of work. The dominating performance increased Guth's gaudy fall program totals to 15 innings of work with 35 strikeouts over the course of the first five weekends. His continued dominance has caught the attention of a number of Division I programs, several of which have already seen him throw and others planning to see him at the final stop in the program at Alderson Broaddus University (September 29).

9/15/13 The 6-foot-3, 170-pound lefty has had a breakout fall and continued his impressive string of outings on the mound with six strikeouts in three innings of work. He sat 84-86 with significant arm side run to his fastball and showcased a cut fastball at 82-84 mph. Guth commanded both of his secondary pitches as well including a 77 mph curveball and a 74 mph changeup that showed late downward action. Guth has now struck out 26 batters in 12 innings of work through four weekends of the fall program.

8/25/13 The 6-foot-3, 165-pound lefty sat 84-86 while touching 87 mph. The lefty recorded eight of his nine outs by strikeout and showed significant run to his fastball and changeup. Guth throws the changeup at fastball arm speed and showed command of a 72-75 mph 1/7 breaking curveball as well. He has an athletic frame and room to add significantly to his frame.

Guth showcased the strongest outfield arm at the event with throws of 86 mph. The left-handed hitter utilized a high hands load and a leg lift stride leg to produce a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. He displayed the ability to barrel the baseball frequently and used all fields in his round of batting practice. Guth went 1-for-6 with a walk in game action over the course of the two days.

8/18/13 Guth was impressive. The 6-foot-3, 165-pound lefty utilized a fastball that he cuts and runs along with a 73 mph curveball and a 71 mph changeup. Guth sat 83-85 out of a high 3/4 arm slot his first two innings of work and was consistently 86 in his final inning on the hill.

7/30/13 Guth showed capable actions at first base and a fluid swing with an 83 mph bat exit velocity at the plate. It was on the mound that he excelled. The 6-foot-3, 165-pound lefty has plenty of room to add to his frame making his current 83-85 mph velocity that much more interesting. Guth displayed run and cut to his fastball at various times touching 86 mph early. He also showed feel for a 74 mph curveball and a 74 mph changeup.

6/12/13 Guth is a 6-foot-3, 165-pound LHP/OF that showcased the ability to barrel the baseball consistently in a solid round of batting practice. Guth hits out of a square stance and incorporates a strong hip turn to create barrel whip and an 83 mph bat exit velocity. Guth worked three innings on the mound sitting 82-83 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. He also commanded a 1/7 breaking curveball that sat 69-72 mph and a 69 mph changeup. The lefty has a frame and loose arm action that suggests significant velocity increases are likely in the future.
