Fun with Early-Season Statistics

By Jacob Gill

Early-season statistics can certainly be misleading (with the obvious caveats being small sample-size and relative strength of opponent), but they can also be highly entertaining.  We have collected a few of our favorites below.

While the North Carolina commit hasn't been perfect (8 BB, 1 HBP), Conestoga LHP Brendon Little has pitched six innings this spring, recording 18 outs...all via strikeout.

Cuyahoga CC-bound Charlie Placek (11 IP, 12 H, 2 BB, 20 K) and sophomore Trent Vietmeier (5.2 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 11 K) appear to be throwing whiffle balls as they strike out nearly two batters per inning for WPIAL AAA contender Montour.

Meyersdale is absolutely bludgeoning its opponents to the tune of 88-9 during its seven-game winning streak to open the season. Leading the offensive onslaught has been senior Jason Ritchey (9 H in 20 AB, 9 R, 4 XBH, 13 RBI, 7-8 SB) and sophomore Riley Christner (9 H in 19 AB, 12 R, 3 XBH, 7 RBI, 6 BB vs 1 K). Apparently, no one is interested in pitching to Potomac State-bound Connor Christner (6 H in 9 AB, 14 R, 3 XBH, 11 RBI, 14 BB vs 1 K). To put these numbers in perspective, here's what they would project to over a 162-game MLB season:

J. Ritchey - .450 AVG, 208 R, 92 XBH, 301 RBI, 162-185 SB
R. Christner - .474 AVG, 278 R, 69 XBH, 162 RBI, 139 BB vs 23 K
C. Christner - .667 AVG, 324 R, 69 XBH, 255 RBI, 324 BB vs 23 K

With seven of his nine hits (in only 17 at-bats) going for extra bases (four doubles, two triples, one home run), Plum junior Ethan Winesburgh is going to force teams to start playing with an extra outfielder when he comes to the plate.

Malvern Prep's sophomore RHP duo of Matt Daller (10.2 IP, 7 H, 1 BB, 16 K) and Shane Muntz (3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 7 K) have locked down the bullpen for the Friars, while Muntz would project for 61 doubles, 41 HR, and 203 RBI over a full MLB season (currently three doubles, two home runs, ten RBI in eight games played). Lehigh-bound outfielder Chris Butera's seven stolen bases in eight games projects for 142 swipes in 162 contests.
