Strath Haven 4, Conestoga 3 (8 innings)

Angus MayockA contest between the first- and second-place teams in the Central League lived up to its billing, as Strath Haven overcame an early two-run deficit to hand Conestoga its first loss of the season.

The visiting Pioneers struck first on a two-run home run from senior second baseman Tim Miller (headed to Richmond as a primary pitcher) in the top of the third inning. Conestoga junior right-handed pitcher Angus Mayock (right) cruised through his first three innings, facing one batter over the minimum and striking out three.

Trouble ensued in the bottom of the fourth, however, as the Panthers loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks sandwiched around a soft single. Following a strikeout, sophomore shortstop Luke Mutz sliced a base hit the opposite way that eluded a diving left fielder and allowed all three base runners to score.

Tim MillerConestoga answered right back on a one-out double from Mayock that scored Miller (right), but, after a single and stolen base put runners on second and third, Strath Haven senior right-handed pitcher Carl Lanholm came out of the bullpen to record two big strikeouts and end the threat.

Mayock went on to retire the next nine batters he faced before a would-be double off the bat of senior outfielder Jayvon Springfield sent the game into extra innings when Springfield was called out for missing first base. In the top half of that inning, Conestoga has its last best scoring opportunity, but Hofstra-bound LHP David Moore induced a groundout to escape a bases loaded, two-out jam.

The Panthers finally sent the home fans home happy in the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff walk, wild pitch, and runner-advancing groundout put the winning run ninety feet away from home plate with one out. A strikeout brought up junior first baseman (and starting pitcher) Will Carey, who smoked a two-out, two-strike single to right-center and set off a stampede out of the Panthers dugout.
