Game Recap: Father Judge at Bonner-Prendergast

Bonner-Prendergast 7, Father Judge 6

Dan HammerFather Judge senior RHP Dan Hammer (right) was cruising early on, striking out seven of the first eleven hitters he faced, but the homestanding Friars flipped the script against him and a Crusaders reliever in their last at-bat, tallying four runs for a walk-off 7-6 win to move to 2-0 in Philadelphia Catholic League play.

In front of a handful of scouts, Hammer (6+ IP, 5 H, 5 BB, HBP, 12 K) sat 89-92 in the first inning as the struck out the side. The Pittsburgh signee settled into the 86-87 range with his usual advanced change-up, while flashing an improving breaking ball.

Steve FurmanHammer also staked his team to an early lead, smoking an RBI double in the top of the first. The Friars tied the game in the third on a two-out, RBI double from Iona-bound catcher Steve Furman (right). The teams traded runs in the fourth inning before the visitors tallied three in the fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from junior DH Christian Lutz that was one of four fly balls misplayed or dropped by the home team. Bonner got one back in the bottom half on an RBI double from junior first baseman Tim Dougherty, but Hammer recorded his final strikeout of the day and a ground out to strand runners at second and third. Lutz's third RBI of the day extended Judge's lead to three in the top of the seventh.

In the final frame, a leadoff single, walk, and Furman's second double chased Hammer from the game. Dougherty greeted the Judge reliever with a triple over the right-fielder's head and came home with the winning run on a first-pitch, line drive single by junior left fielder Dom Dellabarba.

Furman (2-3, BB, 2 2B, 2 RBI) and Dougherty (2-4, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) led Bonner offensively, while Hammer (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Lutz (2-3, BB, 3B, 3 RBI) paced Judge. Junior RHP Evan Raiburn picked up the win in relief after striking out the final two batters in the top of the seventh.
