Game Recap: Pennridge at Garnet Valley (PIAA District I Playoffs Round One)

By Jacob Gill
Pennsylvania Assistant Director of Scouting

Pennridge 3, Garnet Valley 2

In a well-pitched and well-played contest that one might expect from two quality, evenly matched teams, Pennridge extended its season on a day when Mother Nature smiled on the field as she was punishing the rest of the area. All of the scoring was done within the first eight outs of the ballgame, after which the pitchers settled in and limited offensive opportunities the rest of the way.

Danny LongGarnet Valley got on the board first with a two-run bottom of the first inning. Freshman second baseman Cole Palis laced a one-out double down the left field line and came in to score on a single by junior catcher Dominic Bertone. Another single and an RBI groundout plated the Jaguars' second run.

Pennridge answered right back in the top of the second when its first four hitters reached base to cut the lead in half and load the bases with no outs. Back-to-back strikeouts set the stage for the at-bat of the game, as Monmouth-bound shortstop Danny Long (right) lined a curveball into left field to give the Rams a lead they would never relinquish.

Andrew MayhewThe pitching was on display from there on out. Pennridge junior RHP Andrew Mayhew (5 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 6 K) retired 11 of the 13 hitters he faced over the next four innings, while James Madison-bound RHP Michael Bechtold (6.1 IP, 4 H, 4 BB, 12 K) tossed up his own string of goose eggs. Long relieved Mayhew (right) to start the sixth and struck out four of the seven hitters he faced to record the save.

Pennridge advances to face Interboro in a second round match-up tomorrow.
