state college 7, red land 2 (9 innings)

Some outstanding defense, two quality pitching efforts and some big days at the plate added up to an exciting nine inning win for the visitors on Thursday in a Mid-Penn Commonwealth league game at Red Land High School.

Red Land senior right-hander Noah Keister (8.1 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 7 K, 2 BB) and State College junior right-hander Mason Mellott (8.1 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) kept their respective teams in the game all night long.

Red Land 2019 center fielder Tyler Kehoe jump started the Red Land offense with a single to lead off the bottom of the first and advanced to second when the ball was mishandled in the outfield. One out later Kehoe scored the game's first run on a ground out by Josh Snyder.

State College evened the score in the top of the 3rd inning when senior center fielder Brandon Raquet, a William & Mary signee, drove a ball into the left-center field gap for an inside-the-park home run. Following a one-out Nate Chapman single in the bottom of the 3rd inning Kehoe, a Louisville commit, laced a double to right field scoring Chapman and giving Red Land a 2-1 lead.

That lead stood up until the top of the 7th inning with both pitchers getting excellent defense. Keister ran into trouble to start the 7th when he walked freshman David Shoemaker leading off the frame. Following a strikeout Tucker Triebold reached on an infield single moving Shoemaker into scoring position. Senior right fielder Greg Copenhaver then singled to center field to drive in the tying run setting up extra innings.

Red Land twice had opportunities to win the game late but Mellott stranded a runner at second base in both the 7th and 8th innings. Keister returned to the mound to start the 9th and was able to get Shoemaker to fly out to left for the first out. Kenny Magnes got the State College rally started with a single and Triebold followed with a double to score Magnes with the go-ahead run forcing a pitching change. The Little Lions loaded the bases with one out and Raquet put an exclamation point on his evening by unloading a line drive to the right field corner resulting in his second inside-the-park home run of the evening.

Raquet (3-4, 2B, 2 HR, 2 R, 5 RBI), Evan Moerschbacher (2-4, 2B), Triebold (2-3, 2B, R, RBI) and Copenhager (2-4, R, RBI) led the State College offense on the evening. Kehoe (2-3, BB, R, 2B, RBI) and Keister (2-4) recorded four of the Patriots seven hits.
