Jupiter: Rode's Day 1 Notebook

By Nathan Rode

JUPITER, FL—The World Wood Bat Championship kicked off today in Jupiter, FL, with hundreds of scouts and college recruiters on hand to see some of the country’s best players. PBR Executive Director Sean Duncan and I are taking in the action as well, providing notebooks at the end of the day on what we each saw. My focus is generally on top draft prospects, but I still come across other player while making the rounds. Here are some highlights from Thursday’s action…

+ While official games for the tournament didn’t actually start until the afternoon, there was plenty to take in Thursday morning with some teams playing exhibition games and others taking on-field batting practice. After watching the Midland Redskins and Marucci Elite for a couple innings, I went over to see the Orlando Scorpions’ workout. Their lineup is loaded with dangerous hitters, led by SS Brendan Rodgers (Lake Mary HS, FL), OF Nick Plummer (Brother Rice HS, MI) and OF Kep Brown (Wando HS, SC), among others. Those three were in one BP group, along with C Nick Fortes (Deland HS, FL), and put on good rounds.
