Matt ThompsonMatt Thompson began his high school playing days in a Meadville HS baseball uniform, but transferred to Saegertown HS in 2013 and helped to lead the Panthers to a District 10 title as a junior. The 6-foot, 165-pound LHP announced his verbal commitment to play his college baseball at La Roche College yesterday.

Thompson was first seen by the La Roche coaching staff at the Western PA College Prospect Showcase held at La Roche in June. He showcased a 60-yard dash time of 7.26 and solid glove work around the 1B bag with throws of 75 mph across the diamond. He sat 77-78 out of a 3/4 arm slot with natural cut action to his fastball. He also showed a 69 mph 1/7 breaking curveball that has late bite towards a right-handed hitter's back leg and a 72 mph changeup at near fastball arm speed. Thompson barreled the baseball consistently during a solid round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 87 mph.

ThompsonWhile Thompson has had success as a two-way player in high school, it was his performance on the mound that caught the attention of the La Roche coaching staff. Thompson will likely be the ace of the Saegertown pitching staff heading into his senior season following the loss of RHP Luke Carter (Waynesburg College) and RHP Jacob Digiacomo (Penn State Behrend College) to graduation.

Thompson joins a growing list of Saegertown prospects to have made college commitments in the past two years. In addition to the two pitchers, SS Steven Sada (Miami of Ohio University) moved on to the college ranks following the 2013 season. Thompson is the third senior Saegertown's roster to have made a commitment this year following C Tyler Walters and OF Kyle Wise who both committed to Slippery Rock University. The lefty is ranked No. 258 in the PA Class of 2014.
