Scouting Notes: Doubleheader from PNC Park

Southmoreland vs. Quaker Valley and Bethel Park vs. Greensburg Central Catholic  @ PNC PARK (April 7)

Mid 60 degree weather and a MLB ballpark provided the backdrop for two high school games Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh. While coaches went to great lengths to make sure they got as many players into the games as possible some prospects stood out on the big stage.

Quaker Valley 5  Southmoreland 3

Southmoreland used two walks, a Quaker Valley error and two hits to jump in front 3-0 in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Senior outfielder Zach Ripple's two out single drove in two runs.

Clayton BouchardQuaker Valley strung together four straight hits in the top of the 3rd to tie the game. Unsigned senior OF Clayton Bouchard led the inning off with a triple to left-center field. Bouchard used a short stroke to square the baseball in each of his three at bats finishing the day 2-for-3. He also showed good foot speed getting down the line at 4.16 on a 5th inning single.

Senior Nelson Westwood had a huge day going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an inside the park home run in the top of the 5th inning that gave Quaker Valley the lead for good.

Quaker Valley used seven pitchers who each threw one inning a piece. Senior Jake Pilewicz was impressive in the 5th inning sitting 81-83 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. He showed a hard biting slider at 73 mph and used just 11 pitches to strike out the side.

#2 Bethel Park 13  Greensburg Central Catholic 3

Corey LazorThe Bethel Park Blackhawks came into the game ranked No. 12 in the state and woke up this morning ranked No. 2. Bethel Park jumped on the Centurions for nine runs in the first three innings and gave most of their starters the rest of the day off. The Blackhawks have 11 seniors on their roster and appear primed for big things this year.

The only non-senior in the starting lineup, 3B Zach Forsyth, was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. The sophomore also lined out to first base in his first at bat.

Unsigned senior OF Core Lazor went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Lazor good foot speed a 4.09 time down the line on a combacker to the pitcher to open the game.
