'27 MLB DRAFT WATCH
It's early yet, but not too early to keep tabs on how the Class of 2027s perform as their first summer test ahead of next year's MLB Draft. Last year, we were treated to viewings of some of the top arms in the country that perfectly set the tone for the long road between now and the 2027 Draft, so we'll see who makes an early mark this weekend at LakePoint. As it stands, here are the top-ranked incoming seniors headed to Georgia.
+ National, No. 3: SS Graham Houston (Venice HS, FL, 2027)
"As the industry continues to value shortstops at a premium rate, Houston will have every opportunity to drive his stock high over the next year. A switch-hitter whose offensive production outpaces that (at the same time) of his first-round brother (Marek Houston), he holds a similar prowess with regards to a confident and (potentially) elite glove. A steady filler of the stat sheet whose tools and all around game are elevated in big situations, the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder is likely to develop much more strength in the future which will only aid in further power development. Adding to his allure among this group is a quiet intensity of expected success." – Shooter Hunt, VP of Scouting
+ National, No. 4: OF Grant Westphal (Blue Valley HS, KS, 2027)
"Somewhat rare to find a Kansas position player charging up this high, Westphal holds near-unicorn status (for the state), and deservingly so given the fact that his incessant motor is paired next to a five-tool profile. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound true centerfielder is a 6.5-runner with an elite first step and impacts the ball (107 mph max EV) from the left side with a tight turn and compact stroke that is near slump-proof. A bat-to-ball savant who covers the plate gracefully with explosive contact, a big summer on the circuit is sure to have the industry clamoring for the Texas recruit to be even higher on this list." – Shooter Hunt, VP of Scouting
+ National, No. 5: OF Jacob Seamon (Metrolina Christian HS, NC, 2027)
"Seamon is the youngest of this bunch which is important to note given his long, 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame that is quickly adding strength. Featuring what might be the sweetest left-handed stroke in the country, the incessant lag of the barrel in the zone elicits exciting hit/power potential at a high-level. Just four years after North Carolina prepster, Walker Jenkins, went fourth overall to the Twins, Seam is sure to be measured closely Jenkins because of the proximity, but his profile is different although potentially equally as alluring. Balanced in the box with an imposing presence the ceiling height has not been set, and Seamon holds an obvious case for rising to the top spot in the long term." – Shooter Hunt, VP of Scouting
+ National, No. 7: SS Lubin Rincon (Shadow Creek HS, TX, 2027)
"Although Rincon has been featured in the top-10 of the class for two full years, there still seems to be a “sleeper status” to his presence amongst peers. Wide-shouldered at 6-foot-2, 180-pounds with a lean, athletic frame, his ability to slow the game down stands out as much as the balanced left-handed swing. Patient at the plate with effortless power that needs to be observed in person as it features less electric twitch than controlled aggression, his ability to make quality swing decisions is sure to intrigue the scouting community throughout the summer. Equally as talented on the defensive side with a plus-arm the summer will serve as a proving ground for the Texas recruit to announce his presence with authority." – Shooter Hunt, VP of Scouting
SUMMER TARGETS: CLASS OF 2028
Over 20 prospects ranked No. 1 overall in their state will be in attendance this weekend, further evidence that this weekend will be the center of the amateur baseball world. For the college coaches in attendance, we'd like to take the time to introduce you to the top-ranked '28s on rosters who need to be seen ahead of Aug. 1:
|
Koltyn Watters OF / Rochester Adams, MI / 2028RANKED NO. 4 OVERALL Watters is leaping 19 giant spots in the national rankings in our latest update, all the way to to No. 4 overall in the country. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound outfielder has the kind of ingredients to become the No. 1-ranked player in the country one day, even. He's a 6.47 runner with easy bat speed attached to a left-handed bat that generates above-average EVs for his age and he's headed to LakePoint on the heels of a terrific sophomore spring in Michigan. Watters has a ton of momentum right now that has him charging up the rankings just as the summer starts. |
|
Cullen Scott 3B / RHP / Melissa, TX / 2028RANKED NO. 5 OVERALL It was an electrifying spring for the top-ranked Texas prospect in the state's '28 class. The right-handed swing is simple and he's shown an aptitude to make authoritative contact in game as a result. But Scott made waves for his work from the mound this spring, where he climbed all the way up to 99 mph on two different looks a month apart in April and May. The offspeed is flashing better and better, and was on point in our Texas staff's look in mid-May, signaling the special ceiling that makes him a must-see in Georgia. |
| |
Landon Bonner SS / Hebron, TX / 2028RANKED NO. 8 OVERALL Bonner is climbing inside Texas' state rankings, all the way to No. 2 overall, which has him seated inside the national top-10 too. Here's what Max Semler, Prep Baseball's North Texas Scouting Director, said regarding Bonner in the early spring: "Plus athlete with quick-twitch. Plus runner, 6.60s 60-yard dash. Acceleration present, will get his share of stolen bases. Feet quickness present, showed on defense. Has actions with instincts. Made plays on the move, especially impressive on slow rollers. Can hit, handles bat. Has shown pull-side power at previous events. Love the make-up. Plays hard, hustles. First one on and off the field. Aggressive runner out of box looking for the extra base. Prospect." |
|
Colin Anderson 3B / Etowah, GA / 2028RANKED NO. 9 OVERALL Anderson makes it look as easy as can be. He'll be playing home games this weekend at LakePoint as a local product after he helped steer Etowah to a 6A state championship as just a sophomore. Here's what Ian Smith, Prep Baseball Georgia Asst. Director, published this spring regarding Anderson: "I've talked in length about the type of Anderson brings with top-of-the-class power potential but the glove continues to grow at a rapid rate while showing ability to profile at multiple positions this spring. The flexibility in the lower half has improved greatly with lateral range that has shown in strong up-the-middle actions that can only take the premier profile to another level. The bat will still carry the profile with potential for double-plus raw power that shows often in-game and could have a chance to put on one of the more prestigious rounds of BP in Future Games history, given the opportunity." |
|
Lio Garcia SS / Buford, GA / 2028RANKED NO. 12 OVERALL Ian Smith, Prep Baseball Georgia Asst. Director, also had this to say about the state's top-ranked shortstop: "Garcia has exuded immense polish throughout the profile since my first look back in 2024 and only continues to grow as a well-rounded prospect. Instincts and athleticism at the 6 is as good as you’ll see in the state with a chance for a 60 in both the glove and arm while showing long-term potential at the position. Bat speed has been among the best in the state for years while staying extremely compact through the zone while working through the middle of the field well. It’s hard to poke holes in the profile for Garcia with an impressive floor to match the high ceiling." |
|
Breck Hemphill OF / Harrison, GA / 2028RANKED NO. 14 OVERALL "A newcomer to Georgia this year after moving in from Pennsylvania, Hemphill has made an immediate impact across multiple settings while showing one of the highest ceilings in the state. Frame jumps out at 6-foot-2, 215-pounds with present strength throughout and still showing even more projection to tap into. The power potential jumps out already for the outfielder with flashes of double-plus raw power at peak that shows already. It started at Preseason All-State in January where Hemphill put the class on notice with ability to generate exit velocities north of 105 at the plate and showing present plus arm strength from the OF with an underclass-best 95 MPH. The in-game results this spring have been equally impressive with an eye-performance across two weekends of GDC including double-digit XBH and launching HR to all-fields. Barrel feel is advanced for the age and class and maintains balance through a longer swing path extremely well with significant length in-zone. This is easily the best left-handed power we have in the class with real tools to match throughout the profile, and could have a top-of-the-class type ceiling." – Ian Smith, Prep Baseball Georgia Asst. Director In his first season in Georgia, Hemphill hit .447/.500/.845 with eight home runs and more walks than Ks (14:13). It'll be fun to watch how much further his left-handed bat can shove him up the rankings this summer, beginning at NPI. |
|
Cooper LeRoy RHP / OF / Perry, AZ / 2028RANKED NO. 44 OVERALL At 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, LeRoy is one of the top two-way talents headed to the NPI this week. He looks capable of blossoming into a bonafide No. 1-type arm at the next level and beyond after he was sitting 92-94 mph in the preseason with an on-the-rise slider, 75-79 mph, that should continue to garner whiffs. Offensively, it's a whippy right-handed swing with noteworthy bat speed (75.6 mph avg.) that produced an average EV of 95.2 mph (107.4 max) back at the Arizona Preseason All-State event in February. We're excited to see how Arizona's top-ranked '28 has progressed in the months since, however, as part of the Stinger Zona Boys squad that has 15 of the top 55 players ranked in the state on its roster. |
'27s STILL ON THE MARKET
There are actually quite a few high-profile incoming senior pitching prospects on rosters this week who are still uncommitted, but we're first going to get into the position players in this group, like OF Austin Tamborra (North Cobb Christian HS, GA) who leads the way with balanced power/speed/arm tools for 643 Cougars. He's a 6.77 runner with a 92 mph arm in the outfield, with solid EVs that come from a simple, easy right-handed swing that has him ranked inside the top-400 nationally. His high school teammate OF JD Aufderheide (North Cobb Christian HS, GA) is actually another one of the top-ranked uncommitted players nationally at NPI, though he'll be playing for Wildcatters National this week. Aufderheide is just a well-rounded athlete with 6.64 speed and a productive right-handed bat that hit .355 this past season with nearly 20 extra-base hits in 140 plate appearances.
At backstop, C Tyce Thompson (South Central HS, NC) brings the loudest bat of this uncommitted group, a 104.7 mph max EV, with the arm strength (84 mph) and pop times to stay at catcher, where he'll be for SBA Bolts National. Another catcher, C Andrew Maultsby (Staley HS, MO) is an athletic, defensive-minded backstop whose 6.61 sixty and huge arm strength (85 mph) stand out as plus tools for the position. He's on Building Champions (Cope) this week at NPI.
UNDERRATED '27 STAND-OUTS
|
Jayden Pearl OF / Battle Ground Academy, TN / 2027TENNESSEE COMMIT
The No. 75-ranked player in the country is one of the most tooled-up players in the entire field at this year's NPI where he'll be on Knights National's 17U squad. At a muscular 5-foot-11, 214 pounds, Pearl put on a show at the Prep Baseball Tennessee Preseason All-State event where he averaged elite EVs generated from electric bat speed, and he ran a 6.75 there – though he recorded a 6.56 time at last summer's Future Games for Team Tennessee. His 107.5 mph average EV leads all rostered NPI players by several ticks, and his 111.4 mph max is also the top on rosters. (3/23/26) |
|
Hector Cadena 3B / SS / Laredo United, TX / 2027TEXAS A&M COMMIT
Cadena was one of the most impressive performers at last summer's Prep Baseball Future Games, so it'll be exciting to see him back at LakePoint this week after a terrific spring for his high school. Cadena broke out at Laredo United as a sophomore and he topped himself this past season as his district's offensive player of the year after he slashed .453/.540/.764 with a 1.304 OPS and 20 extra-base hits as the team's everyday shortstop. His 88.4 mph average bat speed recorded at Future Games is also the second-highest average mark among all rostered players at this year's NPI. He rose inside Texas' top-40 in the state's most recent Class of 2027 update, and he could be in for an even more substantial rise up the rankings after another strong summer, which starts now as a member of Wildcatters National 2027. (7/23/25) |
|
Noah Goettke OF / P27 Academy, OH / 2027OHIO STATE COMMIT
Goettke is one of the most elite athletes on rosters this weekend and he's headed back to LakePoint after appearing on Team Ohio at the 2026 Future Games and then again recently for P27 Academy Prospect at the ABA Conference Tournament. In academy ball this past spring, Goettke led P27 Prospect with a 1.057 OPS and a team-high five home runs, hitting in the middle of the order as the team's usual center fielder. He'll be with Indiana Bulls Black this week at NPI as one of the top incoming senior outfielders native to the Great Lakes region. |
|
Wyatt McDaniels C / UTL / Mooreville, MS / 2027PEARL RIVER JC COMMIT
McDaniels just led his high school to the MHSAA 4A title as one of the top players in the entire state of Mississippi. This spring, he slashed .312/.517/.646 with a 1.163 OPS with five doubles and nine home runs for Mooreville and he was arguably even more impressive on the mound, where he K'd 111 batters in 64.2 innings and he finished with a 1.19 ERA and a 10-0 record. McDaniels is something of a 'pick to click' for an event like the NPI, considering he's not yet ranked on the national board, but it feels like he's starting to peak at the right time. He's a 6.79 runner with natural right-handed power at the plate armed with huge arm strength from behind it too, where he routinely records 80-plus mph throws to second out of the crouch. Committed to a national JUCO heavyweight program, McDaniels feels like he warrants another look after a stellar junior spring coupled with his stand-out toolset for a catcher. He'll be with EBC 17U (Griggs) this week in Georgia. (2/13/26) |
