LONG BEACH, CA—Though the Area Code Games wrapped up Sunday and much of the crowd thinned out with scouts heading home, there was still plenty to see Monday in the Area Code Underclass Games. Some scouts stuck around to get a sneak peek at the coming years and there was a good crowd of Division I coaches, checking on their recruits while also getting a look at some uncommitted prospects.
The day started off with batting practice sessions for each team, which was followed by three games. Here are some notes and highlights from the entire day…
+ One of the top prospects of the day came right out of the chute. RHP Kyle Hurt (Torrey Pines HS, CA) started for the Brewers (Southern California) against the White Sox (Midwest) and pitched three innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five. Already verbally committed to Southern California, Hurt has the makings of being a frontline prospect in the 2017 class. He has a projectable frame at 6-foot-4, 205 pounds with present strength and room to add more as he physically matures. His delivery is extremely easy and balanced and he has a quick, loose arm action. The ball comes out of his hand well and he has arm-side life to his fastball, which sat 87-88 mph and hit 90 a few times while inducing weak contact. His breaking ball was loose at 73-76, but he flashed some good ones with sharp break and good shape. He also has feel for a changeup at 79-81.
