Mid-Atlantic Southpaws

Left-handed pitchers are always at a premium, and college coaches are constantly looking for southpaws to add to their program’s staff. Kicking off the start of a three week series on left-handed pitchers from across the PBR coverage area, In the Weeds checks in on six uncommitted 2019’s from the Mid-Atlantic. Recruiters will want to take each name down as they map out their spring/summer schedule as they each feature feel for pitching, quick arms, and the possibility of making a jump in the near future.

Scherrer stood out as an arm to follow when he performed at the PBR New York Procase in June. He features a clean, fluent arm swing, and easily works downhill with an athletic, repeatable delivery. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound left-hander’s calm demeanor on the mound stands out, and his poise in pounding the strike zone during a big event is not something to dismiss. Scherrer’s fastball has angle, and will likely be up even higher in the spring than its current 85 mph max. Releasing out of a high 3/4 , Scherrer’s best secondary pitch is his 70-74 curveball. The pitch features tight spin with sweeping, slurve-like action, and has a chance to be a weapon for him at the next level. He shows feel in changing speed and shape of it. Overall, Scherrer is going to be closely watched by recruiters this spring/summer as he may have a chance to be a starter at the next level, but his breaking ball will give him the ability to get outs in any roll.
