Mid-Mississippi Classic

Jackson, MS - The first couple weeks of the Mississippi High School Baseball season present an opportunity to cover teams from across the state competing in multiple tournaments. This gives recruiters, evaluators and the Prep Baseball Report scouting staff the chance to see a number of players in a short amount of time. Included in today’s Mississippi Scout Blog are notes on several players we caught in action this weekend at the Mid Mississippi Classic Tournament.

Landon Tomkins, OF/RHP, Northwest Rankin, 2018
Hinds CC commit. Standing 6-foot-2, 185-pounds with long limbs. The right-handed hitter has a balanced setup with high back elbow set. Starting open, Tomkins works closed with simple rhythm. Scorched two balls with the first being a line drive double to left field and the second being a homerun that left the yard in a hurry.

Sam Brooks, RHP, Madison-Ridgeland Academy, 2018
Uncommitted. 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame. The right-hander works from a ¾ slot with a long, loose arm stroke. His fastball sat 78-79 for the entire outing, dropping down to 77 mph a handful of times. Worked in the strike zone locating fastball while only allowing one walk in 3.2 innings.  Curveball has gradual break and sweeping action at 69-71.
