NC Insider: TPA National Workout - Statistical Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

On Sunday November 12th, 81 high school players assembled at Apex Friendship high school.  TPA National held a workout to identify players for their upcoming 2018 teams.  Players from the 2019, 2020, and 2021 classes went through a pro-style workout that included a laser timed sixty, offensive stations, and a defensive workout.  Players then played in a controlled scrimmage situation, allowing pitchers to throw to live hitters.

Prep Baseball Report was on hand to organize the event, help run the workout, and collect statistics.  Each player at the workout will receive an updated PBR Profile that includes a head shot and the updated stats from the event.  Select players will be featured in the Fall Scout Blog in the next week.

Each position player in the event went through a full warm up with TPA staff, trained in strength and conditioning.  Players then ran a laser timed 60.  Being November, this was one of the first cooler days of the year, with temperatures ranging 43-46 degrees at the time of the sixty.  Players then began their offensive workout.  Batting cage stations were setup.  One station was setup to collect an exit velocity in a controlled setting.  On field, players saw live BP, allowing them to show their swing to TPA and PBR staff.  Following the offensive workout, players went through their defensive workout, throwing from centerfield, shortstop, and/or behind the plate.  PBR was able to gather arm speeds from each positional throw, and pop times on the catchers.

David Keith (RHP/MIF, Fuquay Varina HS, 2020) was impressive on the mound.  The right hander worked up to 88, sitting 83-86.  Still working to control his mechanics and the baseball, when the rhythm syncs up the ball jumped out of the hand.  Ben Peterson (3B/RHP, Apex HS, 2020) is a right-handed pitcher that may take a jump this spring.  While warming up the fastball reached 86, working with rhythm and good direction.  When a hitter stepped in, the rhythm became choppy and the fastball sat 80-82.

Jayson Arendt (RHP/MIF, Holly Springs HS, 2019) played well throughout the day.  The right-handed hitter ran a 7.03 sixty and followed it up with a good batting practice.  Rotational and slightly uphill, he is looking for extension, while showing good barrel awareness and an exit velocity of 91 mph off the tee.

Sam Kulasingam (MIF, Holly Springs HS, 2020) has advanced actions and soft hands at shortstop.  The exchange and release are quick and easy producing carry and accuracy on throws.  He was 81 mph across the diamond and ran a 7.43 sixty.  At the plate, the switch hitter showed a simple, loose swing from both sides.  He is geared more to pull from the left side, but found the barrel easily.  From the right side, he was thin through the ball at times.

The youngest group of players may have featured some of the most sound approaches at the plate.  Bryan Arendt (C/RHP, Holly Springs HS, 2021), David Dilday (MIF, Apex Friendship HS, 2021), and Will Marcy (MIF, Cardinal Gibbons, 2021) showed the most consistent barrel contact, with bat speed.  Marcy, a right-handed hitter has a lanky, athletic frame.  The swing is geared uphill, with looseness, producing top spin at times.  Running a 7.20 sixty, the exit velocity peaked at 77 mph off the barrel with more to come.

Several players show up consistently in the leader board, when looking at the top statistical performances on the day.  Catcher Alex Imposimato (2020), catcher / RHP and infielder / outfielder Richard Hooks (2019) performed well on the day.  In the full statistical look below, you will see each name populate several statisitcal categories.
