NC in the 2020 MLB Draft

Brandon Hall
Executive Director, PBR of NC

The 2020 MLB Draft was a draft to remember.  Due to COVID-19, high school and college seasons were shortened, scouts were taken off the road, and the draft itself dropped from 40 rounds to 5.  MLB faces revenue issues and capped some of the spending by its teams with the shortened draft and the rules designed to curb non-drafted free agent signings.  Through all of this, the state of North Carolina still made a big splash on the draft, seeing 12 players with ties to the state taken over the two day draft process.

Below we analyze each player with scouting reports, video, thoughts, and opinions from PBR scouts who were on the road this year, and over the past 4 years, reporting on each of these players.  We take a look at where teams may have been right and where PBR Scouts may have been a little light.

The High School Picks

Three North Carolina high school players were selected in the 2020 MLB Draft.  Liam Norris (LHP, Green Hope HS) went No. 119 overall to the Arizona Diamondbacks, continuing a run by the Diamondbacks selecting NC pitching prospects over the past couple of years.  Jagger Haynes (LHP, West Columbus HS) was selected by the San Diego Padres with pick No. 139 in the 5th round.  Shortly after Haynes, Koen Moreno (RHP, Panther Creek HS) was selected by the Chicago Cubs with pick No. 147.  All three selections are expected to sign, foregoing their college commitments.  Norris and Haynes were both committed to North Carolina, while Moreno was a committed to East Carolina.
