In celebration of California joining the Prep Baseball Report family, On the Hunt takes a look at some of the top prospects from the NCTB Fall Classic that was held in Stockton in October. Part One of a two-part series features some of the upperclassmen (2018-2019) that stood out during the event including committed and uncommitted players. Of the six prospects listed below, there are four impressive, possible future weekend arms along with a power-hitting corner infielder, and an athletic, hard-nosed outfielder.

Alex Benavides RHP / 1B / Gilroy, CA / 2018

Benavides had the most impressive “stuff” in Stockton, and it was easy to see why he is committed to San Diego State. Slinging out of tough, ¾ slot, Benavides comfortably sat 87-89 with his fastball. The ball jumped out of his hand, and he exhibited a loose, whippy arm while producing a high spin rate on the pitch. At times, Benavides’ lacked fastball command, but he countered that with supreme confidence in a sharp slider that featured tight spin and tilt at 75-77. With fastball hand speed, Benavides was able to throw his slider in any count for strikes, and it garnered multiple swings and misses. In the future, the pitch has a chance to be an even greater weapon, and could develop into a plus pitch down the road. Athletic with a long, lean frame, the 6-foot-4, 175-pound Benavides also showed off a nice stroke at the plate with some pop to the pull side. However, his work on the mound is what will drive him in the future. Benavides has a high upside, and will likely fill out much more before throwing a collegiate pitch, which could help him in becoming an immediate impact arm for the Aztecs.
