Remember These Names For 2019

By Nathan Rode

Last Friday, the signing deadline passed, bringing closure to the 2016 MLB Draft. There was little drama, as just two players didn’t sign—LHP Nick Lodolo (Damien HS, CA) and RHP Tyler Buffett (Oklahoma State). Lodolo was selected 41st overall by the Pirates and will head to Texas Christian. Buffett went to the Astros in the seventh round.

Our focus has already shifted to the 2017 Draft, but it’s worth looking ahead to 2019 to see who might be top prospects after some college seasoning. Below are five players that caught my eye last summer and should be watched closely as they begin their collegiate careers. This list is meant to avoid the obvious prospects and give some attention to less heralded or even undrafted players. The highest ranked prospect from the PBR Draft 100 to not sign was C Cooper Johnson (Carmel Catholic HS, IL). Obviously, he is one to watch for the next few years, as is Lodolo. Maybe, instead of saying “Where did this guy come from?” in three years, you’ll already know about him…

Sal Gozzo, SS, Sheehan HS, CT (Tulane)
Twin brother to C Paul Gozzo, Sal has a strong frame at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds. He made a few stops on the national circuit last summer, playing in the East Coast Pro Showcase, Area Code Games and Metropolitan Baseball Classic. He stood out defensively at those events with good actions, a clean exchange and strong arm that should be above average down the road. At the plate, he has a short, quick swing from both sides and some pop. He hit a home run from the right side at East Coast Pro and then turned on a double from the left at the Met Classic. He’ll be part of a new era at Tulane with Travis Jewett taking over as head coach.
