Mid-South Preseason ID: Quick Hits

Memphis, TN - The Mid-South Preseason ID was held on Saturday, January 14th at the University of Memphis Indoor Facility in Memphis, TN. This event was an open event that consisted of some of the top prospects from the 2023-2026 classes. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion, ran the 60 yard dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens during the workout and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Saturday.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Saturday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.

QUICK HITS

+ SS/RHP Luke Jenkins (Fayette Academy, TN 2024) continues to build upon his profile. Flashing two-way upside and great athleticism while he continues to fill out his frame and show more strength. At the plate, tall even setup w/ relaxed hands and leg lift. Some rhythm in the load and whip in the barrel w/ pop middle to pull side. Defensively, quick compact arm w/ carry and accuracy to go along with fluid actions. Flashed versatility between infield and outfield. Also worked 81-83 T 84 on the mound w/ some feel for breaking ball at 67-70. 

 

+ C/INF Peyton Goolsby (Arlington, TN 2025) is a young prospect to keep an eye on moving forward. Left handed hitting catcher with a well rounded game and still scratching the surface of his ceiling. Stocky, proportional build w/ lower half strength and some athleticism. Wide, balanced stance at the plate w/ no stride and active hands. Gets on plane early and often w/ lot of barrels in middle approach. Sound defensively w/ solid receiving and fair arm strength. Clean transfers and solid accuracy on throws with T 2.18 pop time. Also worked out at infield and showed some potential to provide multiple paths to the field. 

 

+ 1B/OF JT Maharrey (Arlington, TN 2023) is one we've covered a good bit over the years and he's still searching for the right fit at the next level. The senior's best tool is the hit tool as he just enjoys barreling up baseballs on a line. The frame continues to improve as he has a developed, proportional frame w/ present strength and athleticism. Taller, slightly closed stance a moderate leg kick to gather momentum and fair bat speed. He's shown "hitter-ish" tendencies as he shows an approach and consistency. Defensively, runs fairly well (7.24 sixty) w/ sound actions at first base and good footwork around the back. Can make all the plays and dig out a low throw while potential to play in a corner OF position w/ arm strength development. 

 

+ SS/RHP Collin Woods (Lausanne, TN 2025) was probably the top "fresh face" for the TN prospects. He's not an over toolsy prospect as there is some rawness there that can be developed over the next couple of years. 5-foot-10, 175-lb lean, proportional frame w/ lower half strength. At the plate, even balanced stance w/ bat resting on shoulder and toe tap lower half. Quiet load w/ some wrap, but line drive approach to the gaps and flashes of some potential pop. Defensively, solid hands and fair arm strength w/ very compact arm action and ear release. Some choppiness to the footwork, but moved well laterally. On the mound, FB was 75-77 while mixing a bender breaking ball and changeup to round out the mix. Woods has some potential to develop over time as he develops more strength and rounds out his game. 

 

+ MIF Caden Nelson (Lewisburg, MS 2026) Was one of the former 2021 Junior Future Games participants who made an appearance in Memphis yesterday for our first event of the 2023 calendar year. It all started in the box during batting practice as Nelson showed a mature approach during his round. Pure and smooth stroke from the left-side, relaxed in the box, with controlled and consistent barrels. There is a lot to like in the frame, athletic and leaner frame that is going to continue to fill out and develop as he continues to grow. Defensively sound, covers ground laterally, easy and clean actions in the infield, arm is short and quick. Look for Nelson to have a productive spring season in 2023.

 

+ MIF Dayne Wray (Itawamba, MS 2025) Has made tremendous strides as of late, the addition of some added strength has come into play for Wray as he posted a max EV of 93.2 mph during his round of BP yesterday. Relaxed look in the box, worked up the middle during batting practice with multiple liners. Posted the second highest infield velocity from the event at 83 mph across the diamond, easy flowing actions along with an athletic arm. The frame projects, higher-waisted body at 5-foot-11, 165-pounds. Interesting follow as the Indians at Itawamba gear up for the spring.

 

+ OF Logan Voyles (New Albany, MS 2024) One of the louder bats in the tunnel came from Voyles at the Mid-South Preseason ID on Saturday. Uses every bit of his physical and strong 6-foot-4, 195-pound frame in each swing as he punished baseballs to the pull side during his round of batting practice. Quick hands, with some easy pop, has some natural lift in the swing. Posted a max EV of 95.3 mph at the event. Would expect Voyles to make in impact in the middle of the New Albany lineup in 2023.

 

+ RHP/3B Aiden Steht (Desoto Central, MS 2025) Was easily one of the top performers on the mound from the event on Saturday. Steht is an intriguing right hander that projects with the 6-foot-4, 190-pound proportional frame, well developed in the lower half of the body with long limbs. Had a solid three pitch mix working for him during his 'pen. Flashed a fastball with some arm side action at 82-84 mph, T85 mph. The breaking ball showed some good depth with 11/5 shape in the 69-71 mph range along with a late fading changeup in the low-70's. Everything looks effortless at times for Steht, with the projectable frame, expect some upticks in velo from the young right hander down the road.
