Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Austin at the UIL State Tournament in June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 30 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week and updating the Power 30 rankings.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The San Marcos Rattlers and Coach Bryan Webb return another exciting squad to follow this season after finishing as 6A Area Finalists in 2023. The Rattlers expect to have a solid defensive group in 2024, paired with some exciting new pieces to build around for the future.

Texas State signee and returning District MVP, INF Kutter Gage Webb will lead the Rattlers in 2024. Webb is the son of Coach Bryan Webb and is currently ranked No. 152 in the state for his class, while also being named Second Team All-State a year ago. Webb is joined on the team and in the rankings by Western Texas JC signee RHP/INF Reagan Chomel. Chomel is ranked No. 219 in the state and was named the district’s Co-Utility Player of the Year in 2023, and should help stabilize the rotation for the Rattlers this season. Joining Webb and Chomel in the senior class will be another award winner from a year ago in Hendrix commit UTL/RHP Dylan Nunez, who was Honorable Mention All-District. RHP Vlario Prado (uncommitted) and UTL/RHP Marco Duenez (uncommitted) will round out the returning senior class for San Marcos in 2024 and will help build out the pitching staff.

The Rattlers will feature a trio of sophomore newcomers in 2024 in INF Tres Munos, INF/RHP Caleb Gomez, and C/UTL Colson Geesee. This trio is expected to contribute heavily for the Rattlers’ 2024 varsity squad and should give Coach Webb pieces to build around for the future of his program.

San Marcos features an impressive list of freshmen to follow as they begin their high school careers this season. The freshmen class includes a trio of two-way players in LHP/OF Jack Vasquez, OF/LHP Elijah Ramirez, and UTL/LHP Dallas Villa. The Rattlers’ 2027 class also features UTL Nate Velasquez and INF Kayden Miranda. Coach Webb could potentially call on any of the freshmen on this list to come up and contribute for the varsity squad right away in 2024. But if not this year, this freshmen group will be worth monitoring for the next few years as they continue to develop throughout their high school careers.

There is a lot to be excited about with the Rattlers’ 2024 group when you factor in the solid senior class, which currently has three guys committed to playing at the next level, mixed in with the potential of the underclassmen throughout the program. Although the Rattlers lost a lot from a 2023 squad that finished as Area Finalists, look for San Marcos to make another playoff run within the 6A class this season.
