Academy Select: Scout Notes

Phil Haig
Texas Scouting Director

McKINNEY, T.X.- Earlier this summer our staff was able to witness a scrimmage between two high-end programs in the Academy Select Baseball Club and the Dulins Dodgers. The prospects between to the two teams featured high-end arms, high-end catchers, and high-end position players all over the field. The gameplay between the two clubs was intense with both teams playing with high energy and intent to win the game. Featured below are scout notes on a few standouts from the Academy Select Baseball Club.

POSITION PLAYERS

2021 C/SS Hudson White (Byron Nelson): Texas Tech recruit. An all-around athletic ballplayer that really showed on the well on the day. Strong lower-half and launched ball around the yard in his round of BP. No. 8 ranked prospect in the 2021 State Rankings, and No. 45 in the Overall Rankings.

*Hudson White

2021 RHP/1B Luke Robertson (Wakeland): Houston recruit: Big strong frame. Flashed some serious pull side pop in his round of BP.

+ 2020 OF Jonathan Huff (Plano Senior): Uncommitted. Strong compact frame at 5-foot-5, 155-pounds. Took a solid round of BP. Showed some natural athleticism and feel for the game. Would make a nice addition for a school.

+ 2021 OF/RHP Gavin Perryman (Dallas Jesuit): Uncommitted. Lean-athletic frame. Showed some rhythm in load and drove line drives in his round of BP. Ranked at No. 107 in the State Rankings. Also duals as a pitchers but shows natural athleticism across the field.

CATCHERS

+ 2021 C Creed Willems (Aledo): TCU recruit. Continuously shows well each time we see him. Showed some serious pull-side juice in his round of BP, launching balls out of the ballpark with ease. Real arm strength behind the dish. 1.86 pop times behind the plate with good carry on all throws. Will be an interesting follow through the summer and into his senior year.

* Creed Willems

+ 2021 C Jason Hawkins (Plano Senior): Houston recruit. Solid athletic frame 6-foot-2, 190-pounds. Put on a great swing on a ball in the game, lining a ball into the right-centerfield gap resulting in a triple. Behind the dish, had accurate throws with strong in game throws at 1.98-2.04.

PITCHERS

+ 2021 RHP Eric Hammond (Keller): The USC recruit possess REAL stuff. Long loose arm. The fastball jumps out of the hand up to 92 on the day. Breaking balls are both swing and miss as well, showed a hard slider up to 81 with late sharp action as well as a slower variation with slightly more depth. Hammond still needs to refine command but has a shot to pitch a long time. Sitting at No. 17 in the State Rankings but expect Hammond to rise. A player to follow for the 2021 MLB Draft.

* Eric Hammond

+ 2021 RHP Dylan Rogers (McKinney North): Uncommitted. Fastball had natural cut up to 86 on the day. Underneath the slider some creating some inconsistencies with action. Changeup stays one plane but does show some arm side action

+ 2021 LHP Brett Tanksley (Allen): Air Force recruit: Commanded the fastball to both sides of the plate at 80-82 with high spin at times. Threw the back door breaking ball repeatedly on the day having lots of success. Both his fastball and breaking ball played really well off each other and Tanksley showed his ability to pitch.

+ 2021 LHP Robert Fortenberry (Wakeland) TCU recruit. A long arm path with some natural deception creating tough angles into the right-handed hitters up to 88 on the day. Had most of his success to his gloveside, in to right handed hitters and away to left handed hitter. Flashed a CB with high spin metrics but want to see more consistency there.
