Diamond Prospects Scout Day: Quick Hits & Stats

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

GARLAND, TX - Here is a quick look at what we saw yesterday at the Diamond Prospects Scout Day at North Garland High School.

+ Uncommitted 2019 SS/RHP Quentin Frederick (Plano Senior HS) is going to help a college program. Frederick has a fast-twitch, lean-muscular, athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 155-pounds. Started the day with a 6.7 60-yard dash. The right-handed hitter was on the barrel during batting practice, including launching a home run to left field. Threw 87 mph across the diamond and has natural actions on the infield that should allow him to stick there. His fastball was 83-85 from a ¾ slot with a loose arm swing and arm side run. Spun his breaking ball for a strike with 10/4 shape at 72-73. Dropped his arm slot a bit on his changeup at 69 mph, creating arm side fade. We saw Frederick close out a district game with a victory last spring (CLICK HERE), working the last three innings, allowing no runs on one hit and recording four punchouts. Overall, the athleticism, speed and quick-twitch actions standout, and Frederick should find a home sooner rather than later.

+ Uncommitted 2019 C Austin Gallagher (Waxahachie HS) has a strong frame at 5-foot-10, 190-pounds. Solid receiver behind the dish, including catching the last couple of bullpens in the dark. Accurate arm to second base, clean exchange with fundamental footwork and an easy gather. Pop times were 2.18, 2.19, 2.21, and 2.13, with a top velocity from the crouch of 71 mph. Really like the swing, balanced approach, short path, barrel stays in the zone a long time and he has good strength at contact with a 90 mph exit velocity, and he launched a home run during batting practice.

+ 2021 C DeAngelo Morales (Lakeview Centennial HS) is a young, athletic catcher to keep an eye on. High end glove skills for his class, posted pop times of 2.07-2.26 with solid carry and a top velocity from the crouch of 74 mph. Took a solid round of batting practice, displaying a line drive approach with quick hands and good lag in the barrel. Great job of receiving and blocking during the bullpen session, even after the sun had gone down.

+ 2021 1B Diego Garcia (Home School) drove the ball from the middle to right-centerfield gap with authority. The right-handed hitter has a short, inside-out path with quick hands and a loose finish.

+ Uncommitted 2019 RHP Marshall Cheney (Plano Senior HS) has a wiry, long-limbed pitchers frame at 6-foot-4, 163-pounds. The right-hander topped out at 86 mph, sitting mostly 85 with quick arm swing, and scattered command of his fastball. Changeup flashes fade at 68-70 mph. Curveball has early break at 62-63 mph.

+ Uncommitted 2019 3B/RHP Noah Anderson (Frisco Liberty HS) threw 83 mph across the infield, showed gap power during BP with a top exit velocity of 84 mph, and threw strikes on the mound with an 80 mph fastball, and 65-66 mph changeup with good arm side fade.
