Hallsville vs. Henderson Scrimmage

HALLSVILLE, TX - The Hallsville Bobcats and Henderson Lions met for an early season scrimmage on Monday. There was a wealth of youth on hand, mixed in with some veteran varsity players amongst both groups. Hallsville had several young guys on the field, and will be led on the mound by two 2021 grads, Jeb Drewery and Tyler Lee. Henderson will have some juice in the middle of the lineup, with their three, four, and five hole hitters all returning with varsity experience.

The game started off with some excitement for the Lions when 2020 CF/RHP Brady Johnson hit the first offering from Drewery on a rope to CF, but it was the Southpaw who prevailed, striking out the next two batters and inducing a fly ball to center field to shut down the top of the first. Drewery continued to roll in the second, where he struck out two more guys. While there is plenty of youth on the mound, Hallsville does return 2020 SS Easton Loyd this season, who didn’t take long to show up, making a a great play in the six hole to prevent a lead off hit in the second inning. He showed plenty of range to both sides as well as more than enough arm strength.

In the bottom of the second inning, Hallsville’s Zach Daniels plated the first run, and by the third it was all Bobcats. After another scoreless frame defensively, Hallsville pieced together four hits in a row, highlighted by a deep ball to the left center gap from 2020 3B Blake Ware. Henderson did threaten in the 5th inning with a line drive single from 2021 OF Dalton Modisette that put runners on second and third, but one of the few seniors on the field, 2019 RHP Mathew York diffused the threat with a strikeout.

Although it wasn’t on display tonight, there is some big bats in the line up for Henderson. 2020 grads Collin Everitt and Brady Odom both have enough juice to leave the yard at any time. There is also Modisette who fits nicely into the five hole and has already proven to be mature beyond his years at the plate with one season of varsity experience under his belt. One of the better athletes on the field was also the starting pitcher for the Lions, Brady Johnson. He played well in centerfield and shows promise as a lead off hitter. Hallsville will look to 2019 grads, Brayden Johnson (Prairie View A&M) and Chase Amick (Eastfield JC) to provide run support around their young lineup. Both fresh off commitments to play at the next level, they are big swingers with the ability to drive in a lot of runs this year.
