Heritage Walks-Off On Independence

FRISCO, TX - Frisco Heritage hosted Frisco Independence last night in a 5A district game. On the mound for Heritage was 2019 RHP Evan Vanek, a Texas A&M commit. Independence would send 2019 RHP Dalton Davis to the mound.

Not much was happening for the first four innings, with neither team scoring. Vanek and Heritage worked out of several jams, making quality pitches with runners in scoring position and stranding multiple runners in the first two innings. Independence got on the board with three runs in the fifth inning, thanks to a leadoff error and a single, followed by a sac fly by Dalton Davis. After a walk and HBP, 2021 Alan Bernhardt got another run home with an RBI groundout. After a passed ball, Independence went up 3-0.

Davis and Independence cruised for five innings, keeping the Coyotes offense at bay. But in the bottom of the sixth, Heritage would cut the lead to 3-2 with a 2-RBI single off the bat of 2018 C Corey Norman. 2018 LHP Justin Butz, a New Mexico JC commit, held the score at 3-2, working two scoreless innings of relief.

Then came the bottom of the seventh. 2020 DH Christian Teran was hit by a pitch then lifted for a pinch runner. After 2020 LF Joel Shea walked, both runners advanced a base on a passed ball, runners on 2nd and 3rd, 0 outs. After Independence made a pitching change, sophomore 3rd baseman Aidan Gebhart came up huge, sending a 2-1 fastball into the left-centerfield gap for a 2-RBI walk-off double. Final Score: Heritage 4, Independence 3.
