PLANO, TX - The McKinney Lions defeated Plano Senior behind a complete game, three-hit performance from senior right-hander John Marrs Friday night. Marrs was efficient, needing only 89 pitches to hold the Wildcats to one run on three hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Plano starter Matt Foster was equally impressive, hurling six and two-thirds innings without allowing an earned run, and striking out ten.
The first three innings rolled by as both starters pounded the strike zone. McKinney would get on the board in the top of the fourth, when left-fielder Wilson Galvan led off the inning with a single. After another base hit by shortstop Jake Smith and a sacrifice bunt by catcher Mike Goller, the Lions would have runners on second and third. Plano left-hander Matt Foster would strike out the next two batters, but not before Galvan would score on a wild pitch.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of McKinney heading into the top of the seventh. Lions’ catcher Mike Goller would reach on an error, and a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Pepper Jones moved Goller to second. Foster got a ground ball out from the next batter, then Lions Head Coach Jeremy Price would send pinch hitter Cole Valek to the plate with two outs. Valek would single through the right side, putting McKinney up 2-0. After two more defensive miscues from the Wildcats and a pitching change, we would head to the bottom of the seventh with McKinney up 3-0.
Outfielder Conner Allen, a Cisco JC recruit, would get the Plano offense going in the seventh when he launched an opposite field homerun to right field. But Marrs would close the game out with a strikeout. Final score, McKinney 3, Plano 1.
