PBR JUCO Wire: Florida Opening Weekend Scouting Notes (Marissa Gusto Memorial Tournament)

Tad Slowik
Special Assistant, Scouting Operations

The Junior College season kicked off last weekend with some of the country's top teams battling it out at the Marissa Gusto Memorial Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla., and almost immediately it became clear why Prep Baseball Report had identified many of the teams and players at the event as some of the best in JUCO baseball. The players already on our radar did not disappoint, and we also were introduced to some newcomers. With all the talent across the Junior College levels this year, fans should be excited for what's to come.

The four PBR JUCO Top 25 programs I saw play over Opening Day weekend in Fort Myers were No. 4 Florida Southwestern, No. 10 Miami Dade, No. 25 State College of Florida and Pasco Hernando, the No. 12-ranked NJCAA Div. II program. The weekend ended with an epic matchup between Florida Southwestern and Miami Dade, with the game going down to the wire before Florida Southwestern walked it off, 8-7. Other strong teams that participated were Gulf Coast (FL), Ranger (TX) and ASA Miami (FL).
