Shallowater vs. Denver City

DENVER CITY, TX- Shallowater (13-4, 5-0) traveled down to Denver City (14-5, 4-1) on Monday night for a district 2-3A matchup. 

This game had the makes of being a very competitive pitchers’ matchup with Texas State commit RHP Hayden VanderRoest on the mound for Shallowater, and Weatherford College signee RHP Luis Rodriguez on the mound for Denver City. VanderRoest showcased why he is one of the top arms in the area with a dominant outing, and at point was an out away from a no-hitter. Rodriguez showed flashes of dominance with a big-time fastball that sat 86-88. The right-hander would pitch 3.1 innings, punching out six, and allowing eight hits, with many defensive miscues that would lead to prolonged innings for the big bodied right-hander.  

Offensively, Shallowater was dialed in from the start with big-time offensive performances from seniors 2B Blake Carter who turned in an impressive 3-for-5, with a homerun, a double, an RBI, and collected four runs. CF Cutter Sparks turned in a four hit day going 4-for-4, with an RBI, and a run. Texas State commit RHP Hayden VanderRoest also a contributor to the offensive productivity was 2-for-3 with 2-RBI’s on a couple of hard-hit singles. No one had the type of offensive showing that uncommitted senior DH Holt Pierce did, Pierce was a catalyst for this Shallowater lineup driving in seven runs, going 2-for-3 with two homeruns to LF. Shallowater would score 15 runs on 14 hits in their victory over Denver City.

Denver City would score four of their six runs in the fifth, that started off with an RBI double from sophomore C Mario Sanchez cutting into the Shallowater deficit 12-2. Sophomore CF Uriel Rodriguez would drive in another run for Denver City, after collecting an RBI on the fielder’s choice ball to SS. Weatherford commit 2B Braden McGary would drive in Denver City’s third run of the inning after a single through the right side, McGary who would later score via passed ball. Denver City would scratch for one more run in the seventh on a sac-fly from Weatherford signee RHP/1B Luis Rodriguez. Denver City would not be able to overcome the nine-run deficit and would fall to Shallowater 15-6.
