MANSFIELD, TX—On Friday, The Rode Show was at Legacy HS, TX, to see two games in the Drew Medford Memorial Tournament with the focus being on Legacy C Nate Rombach. A Texas Tech recruit, Rombach has a strong, athletic frame at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds. Facing RHP Mason Ornelas (L.D. Bell HS, TX), a Texas A&M recruit, in the first game, he was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. His strength showed out in the second game, against Arlington Martin HS, TX, as he went 2-for-4 with a single, double, RBI and two runs scored. With a short, powerful stroke, he stung the ball in his first three at-bats. First was a lineout to center field, followed by a single to left and then a double yanked down the left-field line. Nobody tested his arm in the first game, but he has a 1.77-second pop time to third base for a caught stealing the first inning of the second game. In between innings, his warm-up pop times were routinely around 1.95 seconds.

Ornelas, who has a short, strong frame, pitched at 86-88 mph and showed advanced feel for a fading changeup in the high 70s. He also mixed in a slurvy breaking ball. He pounds the strike zone, throwing 77 percent strikes and first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 23 batters he faced. He allowed three runs on four hits and a hit batter while striking out nine across six innings.

For Arlington Martin in the nightcap, OF Elijah Nunez stood out for his speed and strength. He reached on an error and fielder’s choice in his first two at-bats and then smacked an opposite field home run in his third. A Texas Christian recruit, he stands at 5-foo-9, 170 pounds with lean strength.
