Eastern Shore Showcase: Catcher and First Base Analysis

The 2015 Prep Baseball Report Eastern Shore Showcase took place on Tuesday, July 7th at the Delmarva Shorebirds stadium in Salisbury, MD. 35 prospects from the Delmarva (Delaware/Maryland) area in the 2016-2019 class put their ability on display in front of the PBR scouting staff and college coaches from around the area.

Over the course of this week we will be releasing position-by-position analysis articles with scouting reports on each player and identifying the top prospects. Two-way prospects will appear in a positional analysis as well as a pitching analysis. We shall identify top performers in each positional breakdown along with a younger talent (2018, 2019) a Future Watch if applicable. 

Today we look at the catchers and first basemen that participated in the event. Let’s take a look at the participants.

TOP PERFORMERS

Dmitri Floyd C Dover 2017
Solid, athletic frame at 5-foot-10 190-pounds. Hits from a balanced set up.  Nice rhythm in swing.  Short bath path with fast bat speed.  Smooth load and medium stride.  Good balance in swing.  Exit Velocity of 86 mph.  Quick exchange behind the plate. Soft hands.  Would like to see less movements receiving.  Gets rid of the ball and throws had some carry on them.  Pop time got as low as 1.97. Catcher velocity of 73 mph. Ran a 7.57 60-yard dash.

Cade Hurley 1B JM Bennett 2017
Solid frame at 6-foot, 190-pounds.  Hits from a slightly open set up with short stride.  Level path to the ball with some bat speed. Extension through contact with pull side power. Nice balance throughout swing. Exit Velocity of 86 mph. Active feet at first base with clean exchange on turns. Gets rid of the baseball quickly with consistent throws. Throws got up to 70 mph on the turn.  Ran a 7.76 60-yard dash.  Interesting 2017 to follow with some power potential.

Phillip Herber C Milford 2016
Athletic frame at 6-foot 160-pounds. Hits from a slightly open set up.  Short stride with balance in swing.  Level bat path with some bat speed.  Gets long at times and gets lower half involved in swing. Exit velocity of 77 mph.  Quick feet and fast exchange getting rid of the baseball behind the plate.  Throws were accurate to second base with some carry on the throws at 71 mph.  Soft hands receiving with nice hip control and movements.  Pop time as low as 2.01.  Ran a 7.41 60-yard dash.

FUTURE WATCH

Trevor Collins C/RHP Sussex Central 2018
Athletic frame at 5-foot-11 172-pounds.  Hits from a slightly open set up with rhythm in swing.  Level bat path with some bat speed that gets uphill at times. Gap-to-gap type hitter with an exit velocity of 78 mph. Has a good exchange behind the plate and a quick arm action getting rid of the baseball.  Shows arm strength with a catcher velocity of 77 mph.  Good hip and body control on balls in the dirt.  Sound footwork.  Pop time ranged from 2.09 – 2.15.  Ran a 7.97 60-yard dash. 

BEST OF THE REST (LISTED ALPHABETICALLY)

Steven Bontempo 1B/C Stephen Decatur 2018
Projectable frame at 6-foot-1 190-pounds.  Hits from a tall, open set up.  Short leg kick to load. Level bath path with some bat speed. Gets good extension through contact. Has some balance and a gap-to-gap type hitter. Exit velocity of 84 mph. Has active feet around the bag and throws from a ¾ arm angle with a short arm action.  Hands were good and showed a quick exchange on turns to second.  Infield velocity of 71 mph.  Ran a 7.92 60-yard dash.  Interesting prospect in the 2018 class with some projection.

Kamaran Miller 1B Sussex Tech 2018
Solid frame at 6-foot 215-pounds Hits from a balanced set up.  Has a high leg kick with load.  Level bat path that gets uphill at times.  Shows strength and lower half involvement, would like to see more transition with backside lower half. Has bat speed and some balance throughout swing.  Shows power potential with strong frame. Exit velocity of 80 mph. Clean footwork with exchange.  Shows arm strength on turn at 72 mph and potential for more. 7.81 60-yard dash.  Interesting 2018 prospect to keep an eye on.

Mark Terrill 1B Highland School (VA) 2016
Imposing frame at 6-foot-6 260-pounds. Hits from an open set up with rhythm in swing. Simple load with short stride that stays slightly open. Gets good lower half into swing.  Short bat path that gets in and out of zone. Power potential when he stays through contact. Exit velocity of 89 mph.  Clean exchange and gets rid of ball quickly.  Throws on turn got up to 60 mph. 

Grason Winterbottom 1B/3B JM Bennett 2017
Solid frame at 6-foot- 180-pounds. Hits from a slightly open set up with a higher leg kick and closes slightly upon land. Gets lower half into swing. Quick bat with a level path. Pull type hitter with power potential. Exit velocity of 84 mph. Has a loose arm action from a ¾ arm angle. Throws were accurate and consistent on turns and throws had carry on them. Solid fundamentals around the bag that will get better as he increases footwork. Interesting corner infielder with power potential.
