TPG East: Outfield/Catcher Analysis

In mid-June, PBR VA/DC hosted the Top Prospect Games East at Old Dominion University. Over 30 players from multiple classes and all corners of Virginia were took part in the event, and we begin our analysis of those players today with the outfielder and catchers.

 

Gavin Bassett OF / RHP / Gar-Field, VA / 2020

Bassett is 6-0 with an athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open athletic stance, short stride on line, slight load back, wraps bat. Hips rotate and he maintains some lower half balance. Keeps hands inside, short to ball, works uphill to and through contact. Swing generates line drives and he worked gap to gap, exit velocity was 85. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields towards his target. Quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with carry, outfield velocity was 87. Ran a 6.74 60 yard dash.

 

Tanner Clements C / 1B / Matoaca, VA / 2021

Clements is 6-1 with a strong athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a leaned back athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back, has some rhythm to swing. Hips rotate and he maintains some lower half balance after his weight shift. Keeps hands inside, gets barrel to ball quickly, works slightly uphill to contact with good extension through the ball, arms are extended and strong at contact. Swing generates line drives and he showed good approach, working gap to gap, doubles power there with home run power to pull side, exit velocity was 90. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, catcher velocity was 75 and pop times were 1.96-2.08. Showed accuracy on his throws. Ran a 7.20 60 yard dash.

 

Matthew Drumgold OF / Potomac, VA / 2022

Drumgold is 5-9 with an athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the left side from an athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, slight load back, wraps a bit. Hips rotate quickly and maintains good balance during swing. Keeps hands inside, short to ball, level swing. Swing generates line drives and he uses the whole field, exit velocity was 84. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields towards his target with above average hands. Quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, outfield velocity was 81.

 

Matthew Ford C / 2B / Oakton, VA / 2020

Ford is 5-9 with an athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a relaxed, balanced athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load down and back, has some rhythm to swing. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance during his swing. Keeps hands inside, short to the ball level line drive swing, showed good approach, working gap to gap, some doubles power, exit velocity was 83. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, catcher velocity was 75 and pop times were 1.96-2.04. Ran a 7.44 60 yard dash.

 

Coleman Grehawick RHP / OF / West Springfield, VA / 2020

Grehawick is 5-11 with an athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open, wide athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back, has some rhythm to set-up. Hips rotate and he maintains good lower half balance. Keeps hands inside, short to ball with some extension through it, level path to contact with some uphill through ball. Swing generates line drives and he showed a pull preference, exit velocity was 79. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields with average hands. Clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, outfield velocity was 79. Ran a 7.49 60 yard dash. 

 

Caleb Grizzard LHP / OF / Cosby, VA / 2022

Grizzard is 6-0 with a lankier athletic frame that still has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a slightly open athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate violently and he maintains good lower half balance. Keeps hands inside, short and quick to ball with some extension through it, slightly uphill path with a quick bat. Swing generates line drives with some carry, gap power is already present, showed a slight pull preference, exit velocity was 90. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields with above average hands. Clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a loose arm action, outfield velocity was 83. Also showed versatility taking balls in the infield, where his velocity was 79.

 

Chase Hustead RHP / OF / Hanover, VA / 2022

Hustead is 5-11 with a lankier athletic frame that still has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a wider balanced athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, smooth load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Keeps hands inside, quick to contact with some extension through ball, slightly uphill path. Swing generates line drives with some carry, showed a slight pull preference, exit velocity was 78. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields with average hands. Clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a quick loose arm action, outfield velocity was 87. Ran a 7.03 60 yard dash. 

 

Bryce Jones OF / OF / Cape Henry Collegiate , VA / 2021

Jones is 6-0 with a lanky frame that still has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the left side from an athletic stance, short stride on line, slight load up. Hips rotate completely with some violence and maintains some balance during swing. Keeps hands inside, short to ball, level swing with some extension through the ball. Line drive swing, showed good approach working gap to gap, exit velocity was 84. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields towards his target. Clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, outfield velocity was 86. Ran a 6.95 60 yard dash.

 

Dylan Jones RHP / OF / Manchester, VA / 2022

Jones is 6-0 with an athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a relaxed open upright stance, short stride on line, slight load back, closes hips during stride. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Keeps hands inside, short to the ball, level line drive swing. Showed good approach working gap to gap, exit velocity was 85. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields with average hands. Clean exchange, throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, outfield velocity was 83. Ran a 7.22 60 yard dash.

 

Trent Jones OF / RHP / Cape Henry, VA / 2020

Jones is 6-2 with a lankier athletic frame that still has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a wide athletic, slightly open stance, minimal stride on line, no load. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Keeps hands inside, very short to the ball, quick bat with extension through it. Showed good approach working gap to gap, swing is slightly uphill, ball jumps off bat in the gaps, exit velocity was 96. In the outfield, rounds ball aggressively and fields with above average hands. Quick clean exchange, throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, outfield velocity was 84. Ran a 6.86 60 yard dash.



Max Kuhle OF / Cape Henry, VA / 2022

Kuhle has a lanky frame that still has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a crouched slightly open athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back, good rhythm to set up. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some balance during swing. Short to ball, quick bat, slightly uphill swing with extension through the ball, strong at contact point. Line drive swing with carry in the gaps, showed good approach working middle of the field, exit velocity was 86. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields towards his target. Clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, outfield velocity was 79. Ran a 6.97 60 yard dash.

 

Dustin Moon OF / 2B / Isle of Wight Academy, KY / 2022

Moon is 5-8 and has a lankier athletic frame that still has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, strides on line, loads back into a bar. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some balance during swing. Short to ball, level line drive swing, showed good approach working middle of the field, exit velocity was 68. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields towards his target. Clean exchange, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, outfield velocity was 71. Ran a 7.36 60 yard dash.

 

Caden Plummer OF / RHP / Lee Davis, VA / 2021

Plummer is 5-11 with a lankier athletic frame that still has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an upright balanced athletic stance, strides on line, loads down and back, has a good rhythm to his set-up. Hips rotate completely and he maintains good balance during swing. Short to ball, keeps hands inside, strong at contact with extension through the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing, showed good approach working gap to gap, has some natural loft in his swing, exit velocity was 88. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields towards his target. Clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short quick arm action, ball carries out of hand, outfield velocity was 89. Showed versatility taking balls in the infield, where his velocity was 88. Ran a 6.92 60 yard dash.

Jeffrey Stiff II OF / 2B / Clover Hill, VA / 2022

Stiff is 5-7 with an athletic frame that still has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an upright balanced open stance, strides on line, loads back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains good balance during swing. Short to ball, keeps hands inside, level line drive swing, showed good approach working gap to gap, exit velocity was 73. In the outfield, rounds ball and fields towards his target. Clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, outfield velocity was 73.
