All-State Games: Statistical Analysis

On Tuesday, June 29, the PBR Illinois staff hosted the All-State Games at The MAX in LaGrange, IL. The invite-only event featured over 50 of the top 2023s from Illinois and Wisconsin, all of whom are currently uncommitted.

A number of high-level prospects came out of the event and warrant high-follow status moving forward. Below we take a look at some of the top standouts from the day.

Evan Gustafson (Altoona, WI, 2023) was one of the top statistical performers at this showcase, highlighted thoroughly within the Quick Hits published earlier in the week. The left-handed-hitting catcher, listed at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, started his day by running a 7.15 and reached a 96 mph max exit velocity during BP, and eventually tied for the highest velocity during catcher defense (79 mph). This was his PBR event debut, and he’ll be joining us as a member of Team Wisconsin at the PBR Future Games at the end of the month.

+ Each time we see him, SS Ryan Niedzwiedz (West Aurora, 2023) manages to impress us. This time around, he showed an uptick in infield velocity, reaching a 90 mph high across, all while averaging one of the highest average exit speeds from the left-handed batter's box, including his 96 mph max. A fellow left-handed-hitting shortstop, Bryer Arview (Civic Memorial, 2023), similarly impressed in the batter's box with his 97 mph max exit speed, while continuing to show sound up-the-middle defensive actions.

+ In the short time between PBR showcases, Connor Olson (Arrowhead, WI, 2023) demonstrated improvement in several statistical categories. He shaved his 60 time down from 6.92 to a 6.80 while also increasing his exit velocity to 98 mph during his BP round.

Each of the 21 arms who pitched at the All-State Games showcase reached at least 83 mph, and the top five arms at the event were able to hit 86-plus, three over 88. RHP Ryan Geraghty (Carmel Catholic, 2023) came away from the event as a rising follow in the state, touching 90 mph, the day's highest max fastball velo. RHP Thomas Burns (Hortonville, WI, 2023) has a live fastball with carry traits, and it sat 86-89 mph at this event, nearly matching Geraghty's event-high.
