Recruiting Roundup: Who's Heading Where?

2017 LHP James Grassl of Waukesha West took a visit to Ohio University and is planning a visit to Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Grassl was a member of Team Wisconsin at the Future Games this past summer. Here is a report on Grassl from the event

James GrasslLong projectable frame, 6-foot-4, 165-pound left-handed pitcher, slender build. Delivery is clean and athletic, shows the ability to repeat. Projectable arm action, loose and clean with length, high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 80-81 touching 82 mph, pitched with arm side run. Curveball played at 67-69 mph, 1/7 action. Changeup has good feel with arm side action, 75-76 mph. Struck out three in two innings of work.

Lucas Maurina, SS, Altoona, 2016
UW-La Crosse

Lucas Maurina7/14/15 - 5-foot-8, 150-pound, left-handed hitting shortstop. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and short leg lift stride. Good balance with a fast bat. Line drive spray hitter with fluid rhythm. 76 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.19. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Soft hands with fluid footwork and a clean exchange. Profiles at second base. Threw 75 mph across the infield.

Justin Stollberg, LHP, Brookfield Central, 2016
St. Louis University

Justin Stollberg6/18/15 - 6-foot-1, 180-pound left-handed pitcher, average frame. Smooth delivery with tempo, toe up into balance position, can create more separation. High ¾ arm slot, long arm action. Fastball showed run, 83-85 mph, ability to throw strikes. Curveball has 2/8 shape, slight sweep type action, 71-75 mph. Changeup thrown with fastball arm action, 80-82 mph, could get more velo separation from fastball. Easy arm, tough angle, good matchup on lefties.

Carson Youngquist, C, Hamilton, 2016
DMACC

Carson Youngquist6/18/15 - Projectable frame, long lean build, 6-foot-4, 205-pound catcher. Ran a 7.3 60, better than average for his position. Defensively uses a short over the top arm action out of the crouch, arm played at 75 mph, showed some carry but typically missed target up. Stands up quick out of the crouch, keeping a lower base can keep throws on line better. Pop times ranged 2.03-2.25. Showed an ability to block in bullpens. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, leg kick trigger. Shows effort to start swing, 90 mph exit velocity from the tee.

Jacob Varick, RHP, Kettle Moraine, 2016
UW-Oshkosh

Jacob Varick5/9/15 - 6-foot-2, 177-pound, two-way player, athletic build. Throws from a ¾ slot, long arm action, landing slightly open. Fastball sits 78-82 mph showing some sink. Tends to get around his slider throwing it 71-74. Changeup 77-79 with good arm speed. Showed his ability to play through the ball with fluid footwork, 83 mph from the outfield. Hits from a balanced, open stance, showing average balance. Displayed average bat speed, exit velocity of 80 mph. Ran a 7.02 60-time.
