WIAA Semifinals Rio Advances to D4 Title Game

APPLETON, WI- The Rio Vikings advanced to the Division 4 state championship game with a come from behind 10-5 victory over Spring Valley in the state semifinals on Wednesday morning.

Both teams started out the game hot at the plate. The Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the 1st inning after an RBI groundout from Austen Mason and an RBI single from Sam Green.

Rio bounced back in the bottom of the frame with three runs of their own to take the lead. Trajan Prochnow and Decker Dyle had RBI singles in the inning and Chainey Brewer had a sacrifice fly to do the damage for the Vikings.

The lead didn’t last for long, though. Spring Valley scored two more runs in the top of the 2nd inning. Sean Borgerding and Rem Schneider both had RBI singles in the frame.

Rio regained the lead in the bottom of the 3rd with a 5 run explosion, highlighted by a 2 RBI double by Prochnow.

The Vikings added runs in the 4th and 6th innings to seal the deal and advance to the title game.

Trevor Kearney was the winning pitcher. He threw a complete game with 4 earned runs and 5 strikeouts. Prochnow went 2-for-2 at the plate for Rio with 3 RBIs. Jake Helmer was 3-for-4 for Spring Valley.

Rio will face either Ithaca or Rib Lake in the Division 4 state championship on Thursday morning at 9 AM.
