Appalachian Aces beat Keystone War Eagles 7-5

Josh Kuykendall
West Virginia Director of Scouting

The Appalachian Aces rolled into Morgantown on Friday night for Game 1 of the WVU Team Camp and took care of business vs. the Keystone War Eagles out of Eastern PA. The Aces got out to a five-run lead in the first inning and held on for a 7-5 victory.

Newcomer Brady Whitacre (2021, Frankfort) led the way offensively with two singles. In the bottom half of the 1st, Trevor Thomas (2019, Wheeling Park) cleared the bases with a ringing triple to left center field that scored Devon NealGrant Hussey, and Zach Whitacre. Quintin Smith (2019, Morgantown) then drove in a run on a triple of his own to nearly the same spot. Keystone pitchers were then able to keep the Aces at bay up until the bottom of the 5th. Caleb Hare (2019, Frankfort) led off the inning with a workman like 8 pitch at-bat and eventually reached on a error by Keystone's SS. Issac Miller (2019, Scott) then reached on a Walk before Peyton Brown (2019, Scott) reached on a error by Keystone's second baseman. With no-one out, Zach Whitacre lined out to RF, which scored Hare and advanced Miller to third base. Keystone was able to retire the next two Aces via the strikeout and ended the threat and the scoring for the night.

Luke Ellis (2019, Cabell Midland) was sharp in his second outing for the Aces striking out two in his one inning of work. He sat 84-86, and touched 87. Lenny Washington (2020, St. Joe's) along with Carter Lyles (2019, Scott) both showed fastballs in the mid-to-upper 80's, along with good breaking balls. Hunter Ridgeway (2020, Greenbrier East) made quick work in his inning, striking out two War Eagles, while only yielding a single. Dawson Beckett (2020, Logan) also had a very efficient inning of work. After yielding a walk, he induced a fielders choice and two fly outs, all on 11 pitches, to end the game.

The Appalachian Aces (2-1) will be back in action tomorrow vs. Diamond Skills. First pitch is set for 1:30 pm at Monongalia County Ballpark.
