Suarez’s defensive capabilities have impressed on every viewing. He is one of the best low-ball receivers in the province and has a great base and body for the position. Despite having a Team Canada Catcher alongside him at Canada Cup last summer in Russell Young, Suarez started the majority of the games behind the plate as a credit to his high-end defensive capabilities, enabling Young to take up a utility role. Suarez’s defensive capabilities are well-documented; however, it is his offense that has taken a step forward in his grade 12 off-season. He recorded a max Exit Velocity at the IP Showcase last February of 97.4 MPH and averaged out at 91.3 MPH over 16 recorded swings. He has a short and compact swing and has potential to be a high upside defense-first catcher, with offensive capabilities that could play him into a highly coveted middle of the order type backstop.
