5/3/18 - The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Wilcox has always been a “baseball player” on the mound and I have always felt good about his ability to compete. He is very unique in the way his arm works (long arm action) and the slot he uses (low-3/4 to three-quarter). This is my second look of the spring and I would take the Wilcox that pitches from a true three-quarter arm slot over the lower version from earlier in the spring. He showed better life to a fastball that reached 97 mph and sat 93-95. He showed better shape on his slider and the feel for the change was markedly better. A team can sleep easy knowing the kind of competitor it is getting in Wilcox, but the consistency of his stuff/arm slot out of his longer arm action will determine his ultimate major league role.
3/27/18 - Wilcox is a physically mature high school right-hander with a power arm. He comes from a low 3/4 slot using a fastball, slider and change. He has an aggressive delivery with a long arm swing. He pushed his fastball up as high as 94 and pitched 90-92, he also flashes a power slider (80-84), when he was out front and on top of it. As with most high school arms Wilcox did not need his change-up too much (85). There is no doubt Wilcox's fastball will play down in the zone with heavy sink, but the true test of his ceiling will be determined by his command and the consistency of his secondary stuff out of his low 3/4 arm slot.
8/24/17 - Named to Team USA 18U team.
7/10/17 - Named to Team USA 18U trials roster.
6/29/17 - Allowed three runs on five hits in three innings of work, but all of those runs and four of the hits came on the first five batters of the game. After starting out at 92-95, touching 96, he settled in at 91-93 and retired nine of the next 10 batters. He walked one and struck out two. A Georgia recruit, he pitches with some effort and tended to fly open. He showed very good feel for his changeup at 81-84 with diving and running action. His slider flashed sharpness with hard, later break and depth at times. It sat 82-84 mostly. The fastball also showed arm-side sink on occasion.
2020 DRAFT: A draft-eligible sophomore, Wilcox brings a big fastball, touching triple digits on occasion. He overpowers hitters with the 94-98 mph heat and plus mid-80s slider, generating the power from his intimidating, 6-foot-5, 235-pound frame. His changeup grades out as below average and is currently a work-in-progress. There is some rush and effort to his delivery with a long arm action that can get fully extended on the backside, with a one-piece movement to release. This motion has affected his command in the past, but he showed improvement in the early go this spring. After working mainly as a reliever as a freshman, Wilcox started on the bump this spring for the Bulldogs with great success. In four starts he posted a 3-0 record with a 1.57 ERA in 23 innings, striking out 32 while allowing just two walks. A start like that and his sophomore-eligible status equates to big leverage. Wilcox will get paid to his wishes, or he could return to Athens where he can continue to refine his strike-throwing abilities and develop his changeup while setting his sights on being a top ten overall pick in 2021.
7/3/19: Large frame and physical presence at 6-foot-5, 235 pounds. Attacked with the fastball, overpowering swings for much of his three innings. Fastball sat 93-97 mph throughout the three innings. In the first, he threw all fastballs, ranging 95-97. In his second inning of work, with base runners on, the velocity dipped to 92-95, but as a runner got to third base with one out, the stuff ticked back up bumping 97 throughout the next two at-bats to strand the runner. With runners in scoring position, rhythm and tempo picked up as well. Good competitor. Some effort from the big righty. Average leg kick to the bottom of the chest. Long arm action that can get fully extended on the backside, with a one-piece type motion to release. Front side clears slightly for the release from a high-3/4 slot. Quick arm. Falls to the first base side after extension. From the stretch, delivery times ranged 1.35 – 1.45, and held the same with runners on second. (B Hall)
3/21/19: Tall, physical bodied freshman with a big fastball. Despite rushing a bit with his lower half, dragging his arm and not blocking the best with his front leg, Wilcox recently touched 100 mph in relief against South Carolina and sat 95-98 mph on my look. With a couple of adjustments to his delivery, there could be even more velo to come. He will be draft eligible in 2020 by age. (Seifert)
