Calhoun CC Commit. 6-foot-3, 170 pounds. With the frame of a college basketball player and swing mechanics similar to Alfonso Soriano, it’s truly puzzling to see a player so underrated. Being so lean and long levered, it’s taken a bit longer for him to create consistency at the plate. But oh man has he figured it out at the plate this spring, and it's very exciting to see. His rhythm and trigger have improved so much over the past year. Matt now understands how to keep his hands moving in one spot on the negative move, loading and working into launch position gradually at the same pace of his stride. This has not only dramatically improved the sequence of his swing, but is creating twice the stretch in separation. The result is an explosive rubberband effect post foot strike that creates a laser show from gap to gap. His short, compact load is built for hitting velo. This is without question a D1 talent, and Calhoun did a great job locking him in. With high projection bodies like this, all tools tend to improve as strength improves. That’s exactly what has happened with Matt, as his run and arm tools have gone up along with his power output. One of the best things about him is that his approach doesn’t change, he’s just focused on hitting hard line drives where they’re pitched. As he faces more velocity and fills out in college, this is a guy who will be a walking 95+ EV with his impressive bat 2 ball skills. He makes all the routine plays defensively, and has a flair for the dramatic at the position. This is a key piece for a hopeful Mill Creek state championship run.
