Maybe his best outing of his sophomore season, Russell was locked in from first pitch on Saturday. The uncommitted right-handed arm ended up fanning 11 over six strong innings, as the Canes wrapped up a 12-0 region record this spring. Simple, repeatable actions in the delivery with a compact arm action that works out of a lower three-quarters slot. Living an easy 84-86 T87, with ride and run to miss barrels at a fairly high clip. Much more velocity to project as the 6-foot-3 frame continues to develop as well. Curveball at 71-74 held 12-6 shape consistently with ability to create depth and an above-average command to lock up hitters frequently in-zone. Flashed the changeup in the mid-70s with some tumble from the same tunnel for strikes early in the count. Russell, who’s also a high-level quarterback for Cartersville, has real arm talent and is likely just scratching the surface of his potential.

It was my first chance to get a look at the talented two-sport sophomore for Cartersville and came away impressed. Athletic, projectable 6-foot-3, 180-pound frame, Russell moves well in the mound with a compact arm action and repeatable actions in the delivery. Flashed feel for an advanced four pitch mix with ability to create swing and miss with the full bag, whopping 15 whiffs in just two innings. Fastball was up to 88, living 85-87 with late hop that was getting on top of hitters. Two distinct breaking balls, with a mid-70s curveball with 12-6 shape and slider at 80-81 with sharp horizontal bite. Even flashed a high-70s changeup with arm-side fade that played up to left-handed hitters. The upside is immense for the QB1.
