Burhenn was a workhorse Friday night starter as a true freshman in 2019, posting a 3.96 ERA in 91 innings. He got off to a slow start in 2020, finishing with an 8.02 ERA, but he also struck out 29 and walked just four. On Friday against Illinois, Burhenn showed power stuff, solid pitchability and good poise, getting himself out of a couple of jams. He took a no-decision after allowing two runs on four hits in six strong innings. A physical and athletic 6-foot-3, 215-pound righty with some effort in his delivery that adds some deception, Burhenn worked at 93-95 in the first and held 90-93 velocity for most of his outing, with fair command. His best secondary pitch was an 81-86 mph slider with tight spin, and he was able to land it for a back-door strike against lefties. He also mixed in a useful 82-83 changeup and a big bending curve at 71-74, mostly as a show pitch, though he did double up on the offering effectively late in his outing. (Aaron Fitt)
3/30/18 Spring Scout Blog: Ohio State commit. 6-foot-3, 205 pound Super 60 participant had a strong Fall in Jupiter picking up where he left off by striking out 11 and allowing just two hits in five innings in an opening game win against Franklin Central. Fastball was 89-93 T94 in the first two frames and 87-91 in the forth. Pitch had some late run/sink and was thrown for strikes but did level out and miss up later in the game. Burhenn presented two breaking balls including an 80-86 swing and miss slider when thrown firm and with late downage. Curveball was 75-77 with 11/5 shape and near FB arm speed. The RHP was loose and athletic from a high 3/4 slot. Changeup flashed some advanced potential with significant fade.
10/19/17 JUPITER: sat 90-93 in 1.1 IP vs Padres Scout Team/Scorpions.
SCOUT BLOG: The junior Ohio State commit did not disappoint in his championship outing before running out of gas in the sixth inning. The 6'3", loose and athletic righty was lights out the first four innings of the championship game before getting into trouble in the sixth. The junior was 88-89mph with the fastball early on and commanded both sides of the plate. Long and fast arm action with high 3/4 arm slot. Breaking ball was effective and a wipe out pitch at 79-81mph with downward bite off fastball plane causing big swing and misses for eight strikeouts. The changeup was plus at 80mph with big time fade and tumble away from the left handed hitter. Breaking ball became flat and ran out of juice in the sixth with couple balls up in the zone hit hard. Fast twitch and athletic prospect in the 2018 class that has big arm and upside.
The 6-foot-3, 180 pound Ohio State recruit came in to close things out for the Wildcats in the 7th in a 5-1 victory in the Marion County tournament at Holder Field on Indy's south side. In 1 2/3 IP Burhenn faced five batters, striking out three and getting two groundouts. Burhenn relied mainly on his fastball which sat 86-90, topping out at 91. Arm is quick with life on the fastball.
2/19/17: Burhenn is an athletic 6-foot-3, 180-pounder committed to Ohio State. Over the winter, he sat 88-89, touching 90, while working from a high-3/4 slot with a long and quick arm action. He has a drop-and-drive delivery with choppy rhythm. His breaking ball is still developing and flashes 12/6 shape at times with bite at 76-79. His changeup sits 79-80 with occasionally arm-side run.
12/6/15: 6-foot-1, 155 pound RHP pitches from a ¾ slot with above average arm speed. Loose arm action. Smooth rhythm in the delivery with uphill shoulders. Stays in line to the plate. Fastball shows run at 80-83. Breaking ball is 70-72 with an 11/5 shape showing some late bite. Changeup was inconsistent in the zone but shows arm side run. Hides the ball well and repeats his delivery. Runs a 7.33-60. Long, lean frame. Short, ¾ arm action from the OF with average strength at 82 mph. Possesses average hands and actions. Offensively, hits from a balanced/crouch type setup and uses a leg kick. Average use of his lower half. Average bat speed, slightly uphill path. Choppy rhythm. Recorded a high exit velocity of 79 mph.
