The Copiah-Lincoln Community College recruit was one of the clear breakout performers from our Senior Future Games team last summer, and while Opening Day wasn’t his sharpest outing, the arrow is still pointing up. Johnson drew the start against University Lab and worked 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts, ultimately settling for a no-decision. The stuff, however, continues to trend in the right direction. His fastball climbed to a new personal-best 91 mph and comfortably sat in the 85-88 mph range throughout the outing, showing improved arm strength from what we’ve seen in the past. He attacked hitters with confidence and once again demonstrated his ability to throw three pitches for strikes in any count — a trait that consistently separates him. His 77-79 mph changeup was his most effective secondary offering on the night, featuring late fade and arm-side action that generated soft contact and swing-and-miss when located properly. Even without his best command, Johnson showed improved velocity, feel for his full arsenal, and the competitive presence you want on the mound. If he continues building off the increased arm strength and tightens the strike percentage, he’s poised for a strong spring.

Delivery: Middle of rubber, brings glove over head during a deliberate delivery, strides on line.

Defense: Corner INF profile, looks most comfortable at 1B where he showed solid footwork and actions.

Barrel works steep with a downward plane to contact and slightly uphill through extension, clipped some balls during BP with a steeper path at times, worked mostly up the middle and to the pull-side on a line during BP. 66 mph bat speed with 12 G’s of rotational acceleration.
Power: 89 max exit velocity, averaged 84.0 mph. 285' max distance.
Arm: RH. INF-81 mph. Short arm action, 3/4 release.
Defense: Starts high and plays higher in his stance, a little too patient, stays back a little long and could cut angles more, average hands and actions, corner INF profile, likely 1st base.

FB: T78.3, 77-78 mph. Heavier FB with some life through the zone, stayed down in the zone for the most part T1883, 1826 average rpm.
CB: 62-64 mph. "11-5" shape with average break and depth T1759, 1651 average rpm.
SL: 69-70 mph. Good depth and some lateral movement, more of a two-strike offering T1800, 1767 average rpm.
CH: 70-70 mph. Good sink and late fade to the arm side T1578, 1569 average rpm.
